Crafting Memories: A DIY Fabric Notebook Cover Tutorial

There’s a certain magic in holding a handmade item, a warmth that mass-produced goods simply can’t replicate. Today, we’re diving into that magic with a project that transforms ordinary notebooks into personalized treasures: DIY fabric notebook covers.

This tutorial is perfect for adding a personal touch to your own stationery or creating a thoughtful, eco-friendly gift. As someone who treasures both creativity and our planet, I find immense joy in upcycling and giving new life to everyday objects.

Gathering Your Supplies

Before we embark on our crafting adventure, let’s gather our tools and materials. Don’t worry, you won’t need a workshop full of equipment! Here’s what we’ll be using:

  • A Notebook: The size and style are entirely up to you.
  • Fabric: Choose a fabric that speaks to your heart! Linen, cotton, or even a lightweight upholstery fabric would work beautifully.
  • Lightweight Interfacing: This adds structure and prevents the fabric from wrinkling.
  • Matching Thread: Choose a thread color that complements your chosen fabric.
  • Basic Sewing Supplies: You’ll need a sewing machine, scissors, pins or fabric clips, an iron, and an ironing board.
  • Optional Embellishments: Get creative! Buttons, embroidery, or decorative stitching can add a personal flair.

Measuring and Cutting

  1. Measure your notebook: Carefully measure the width and height of your closed notebook. Remember to include the spine!
  2. Calculate your fabric dimensions: Add 2cm (0.8 inches) to both the width and height measurements to allow for seam allowances. If you’re adding a decorative fabric panel like I did, add extra width to accommodate the panel and seam allowances.
  3. Cut your fabric: Cut your main fabric piece and your lining piece according to your calculated dimensions. If you’re using a contrasting fabric panel, cut that to your desired size, remembering to add seam allowances on all sides.

Bringing It All Together

  1. Create the cover front: If you’re using a fabric panel, sew it onto the right side of your main fabric piece using a 1cm (0.4 inch) seam allowance. Press the seam towards the darker fabric. Top stitch on either side of the seam for a professional finish.
  2. Interface for stability: Iron the lightweight interfacing onto the wrong side of your cover front. This step adds structure and prevents the fabric from stretching or wrinkling.
  3. Prepare the inner flaps: Cut two pieces of fabric for the inner flaps, these will hold the notebook in place. The length of these flaps should be the same as your notebook’s height plus seam allowance. The width is adjustable, but I recommend around 18cm (7 inches). Fold each flap in half lengthwise, press, and set them aside.

Assembling Your Custom Notebook Cover

  1. Layering: Place your cover front right side up on your work surface. Position the inner flaps on top, aligning the raw edges with the top and bottom edges of the cover front. Ensure the folded edges of the flaps face inwards. If you’re adding a closure, sandwich it between the flap and the cover front at this stage.
  2. Attach the lining: Place the lining fabric right side down on top of your layered fabrics. Pin or clip all around to secure.
  3. Sew and turn: Sew around all four sides with a 1cm (0.4 inch) seam allowance, leaving a turning gap along one of the edges. Trim the corners, turn the cover right side out through the turning gap, and press carefully.
  4. Finishing touches: Hand sew the turning gap closed. If you’re using a button closure, sew the button in place on the front cover, making sure it aligns with your closure loop or elastic.
