Hey there, fellow craft enthusiasts! Robert Kline here, your guide to all things handmade. Today, I’m excited to share a simple yet stylish project that will add a pop of personality to your bookshelf: DIY fabric-covered bookends. These bookends are surprisingly easy to make and offer endless possibilities for customization. Let’s dive right in!

Materials You’ll Need

  • 8″ Floracraft® Make It: Fun® Cake Form
  • Floracraft® Foam Cutter
  • 4″ Small Gift Boxes
  • Decorative Fabric of Choice
  • T-Pins
  • Ribbon
  • Glue Gun
  • Rice (for weight)
  • Decorative Felt Flowers (optional)

Step-by-Step Guide: Crafting Your Own Bookends

  1. Prep the Foam: Using your foam cutter, slice the cake form in half, and then into quarters. You’ll be working with two of these quarters for each bookend.

  2. Wrap it Up: Cut two pieces of your chosen fabric, approximately 18″ x 18″, ensuring they’re large enough to completely wrap around the foam quarters. Consider using coordinating fabrics for a cohesive look.

  3. Secure the Fabric: Imagine you’re wrapping a present! Carefully wrap each foam quarter with the fabric, smoothing out any wrinkles and pulling it taut for a polished finish. Leave one bottom edge unsecured for now.

  4. Pin It in Place: Using T-pins, secure the fabric along one straight edge of the foam quarter. Continue pinning along the edges, ensuring the fabric is smooth and tightly wrapped.

  5. Add Weight: Those books aren’t going to hold themselves up! Fill each gift box with rice – this adds the necessary weight to make your bookends functional.

  6. Assemble the Base: Apply glue to one side of the rice-filled gift boxes and attach them together. Then, glue the fabric-covered foam quarter on top of the gift boxes with the T-pin side facing down.

  7. Finishing Touches: Wrap a ribbon around the joint where the fabric-covered foam meets the gift boxes. For an extra touch of charm, glue on decorative felt flowers or embellishments of your choice.
