DIY Painted Jewelry Box: A Simple Upcycle for a Touch of Elegance

Hey there, fellow craft enthusiasts! Robert Kline here, and I’m thrilled to be sharing a passion project that’s close to my heart: upcycling wooden jewelry boxes. There’s something truly satisfying about taking something old and giving it a new lease on life, don’t you think?

Today, I’m walking you through how I transformed a tired old wooden jewelry box into a charming and elegant piece using just a few simple supplies. Whether you’re a seasoned DIYer or just starting out, I guarantee you’ll find inspiration in this project. So, gather your materials, and let’s get crafting!

Breathing New Life into an Old Classic

I found this particular wooden jewelry box years ago at a yard sale. It had potential, but it lacked that certain je ne sais quoi. I had initially painted it a metallic gold and added a “PARIS” stencil on top – a decent attempt, but it never truly resonated with me.

Fast forward to this month, and I decided it was time for a makeover! My goal was to create a piece that exuded elegance and femininity – a fitting home for treasured trinkets.

Tools and Materials

Here’s what you’ll need to embark on this creative journey:

  • A Wooden Jewelry Box: The star of the show! Any size or shape will do.
  • Sandpaper (Light Grit): To smooth out any rough edges or existing paint.
  • Paintable Decorative Furniture Trim: The key to instant elegance! Choose a style that speaks to you.
  • Super Glue: To secure the furniture trim.
  • Paint: I opted for a soft, feminine pink – Country Chic Paint in “Ooh La La.”
  • Paint Brushes: A high-quality brush, like those made by Purdy, will give you the smoothest finish.

Let’s Get Down to Business!

  1. Prep Your Canvas: Lightly sand your jewelry box to create a smooth surface for the paint to adhere to. Remember, proper preparation is key to a flawless finish! If you’re new to furniture painting, my free guide “How to Properly Prep Furniture for Painting” is a fantastic resource.
  2. Add a Touch of Elegance: Apply a thin line of super glue to the back of your chosen furniture trim (also known as appliques or onlays). Carefully center it on the top of your jewelry box. To ensure it bonds securely, place a small weight on top while the glue dries.
  3. Time to Paint! Now for the fun part! Using your paintbrush, apply two coats of your chosen paint color to the exterior of the jewelry box. I decided to keep the interior the original metallic gold, creating a beautiful contrast.

The Big Reveal: A DIY Painted Jewelry Box

And there you have it – a stunning transformation! The addition of the decorative trim elevates this simple jewelry box, giving it a touch of sophistication and charm. The soft pink hue adds a touch of femininity, making it the perfect place to store precious jewelry.

Unleash Your Inner Artist!

Remember, this is just a starting point. Don’t be afraid to experiment with different paint colors, trim styles, and embellishments to create a piece that truly reflects your personal style. The beauty of DIY lies in its limitless possibilities!
