DIY Wall-Mounted Magazine Rack: Taming Bathroom Clutter with Style

Let’s be honest, magazines in the bathroom aren’t exactly glamorous. But hey, they’re a reality in many homes, including mine! Instead of letting them pile up on the floor or toilet tank, I decided to create a stylish and functional solution: a DIY wall-mounted magazine rack.

From Scrap Wood to Bathroom Chic

I love repurposing materials whenever possible, so I dug into my stash of leftover pine and birch from previous projects. Within an afternoon, I transformed those scraps into a charming magazine rack that brought order to our bathroom chaos.

Building the Perfect Magazine Rack: A Step-by-Step Guide

Planning and Measuring

Before you grab your tools, measure the height and width you want for your magazine rack. This will help you determine how much wood you need.

“Always start with a plan,” advises master craftsman Johnathan Miller. “Accurate measurements are crucial for a professional-looking result.”

Creating the Frame

  1. Cut the Wood: Using a saw, cut your 1×2 pine pieces to the desired length for the sides of your magazine rack.

  2. Mark and Level: Using a level, mark the wall where you want to mount the rack, ensuring it’s perfectly straight.

  3. Secure the Sides: Attach the side pieces to the wall using a nail gun and 2″ nails. Be sure to nail into wall studs for extra sturdiness.

Adding the Shelves

  1. Measure and Cut: Decide on the width of your rack and cut another piece of wood to fit between the two side pieces. This will be the bottom shelf.

  2. Attach the Bottom Shelf: Secure the bottom shelf to the side pieces using your nail gun.

  3. Create the Top Shelf: Measure and cut a piece of 1×3 wood for the top shelf, making sure it’s slightly longer than the bottom shelf to prevent magazines from slipping out.

  4. Secure the Top Shelf: Attach the top shelf using your nail gun, ensuring it’s level with the bottom shelf.

Finishing Touches

  1. Fill Nail Holes: Use wood putty to fill any visible nail holes and let it dry completely.

  2. Caulk for a Seamless Look: Apply caulk along any gaps or seams to create a polished finish.

  3. Prime and Paint: Prime the entire magazine rack and then paint it in a color that complements your bathroom decor. I opted for a classic white to match our trim.

A Magazine Rack That’s Both Stylish and Functional

My husband, initially skeptical of my project, was pleasantly surprised by the final result. His Car and Driver magazine finally had a designated spot!

The best part? This DIY magazine rack cost me absolutely nothing since I used leftover materials. It’s a testament to the power of creativity and resourcefulness in crafting beautiful and functional pieces for your home.
