Silken or extra-firm? To press or not to press? These questions might leave you mystified when it comes to cooking with tofu. But don’t worry, everyone at Robert Kline Art was once a beginner! This easy baked tofu recipe, along with my best tips and tricks, will have you cooking tofu like a pro in no time.
Demystifying Tofu: What is it, Anyway?
Tofu, a versatile soy-based food, is made by curdling soy milk and then pressing it into a solid block. It’s a fantastic source of plant-based protein that can be enjoyed in countless ways. While a staple in vegetarian and vegan diets, tofu isn’t just a meat substitute. It offers a unique and delicious flavor profile that can enhance any dish.
Mastering the Art of Cooking Tofu
Tofu’s reputation as a bland meat substitute is a common misconception. In reality, it’s an incredibly versatile ingredient.
Here are my top tips for cooking tofu:
Choosing the Right Tofu:
Tofu comes in a variety of textures, from silken to extra-firm.
- Silken tofu, soft and delicate, is perfect for blending into desserts, smoothies, or adding to miso soup.
- Extra-firm tofu boasts a hearty, dense texture with less water content, making it ideal for baking, grilling, or frying. Use it as a satisfying protein in bowls, noodles, and salads.
Pro Tip: Look for organic tofu made without genetically modified soybeans for the best flavor and quality.
Pressing Your Tofu:
Tofu naturally contains a high water content. To achieve that crispy, chewy texture, especially when baking, grilling, or frying, pressing out excess water is key.
- Tofu Press: A tofu press is a worthwhile investment for consistent, perfectly pressed tofu. It efficiently removes excess water and ensures a delightful chewy texture.
- DIY Pressing: If you’re short on time or don’t have a tofu press, place the tofu block between two plates lined with paper towels or a clean kitchen towel. Weigh down the top plate with heavy objects like cans or books.
Expert Opinion: “Pressing tofu not only improves its texture but also allows it to absorb marinades and sauces more effectively,” says culinary expert and cookbook author, Chef Emily Carter.
No Time to Press?
Opt for pre-pressed tofu brands like Hodo Foods’ organic extra-firm tofu. Hodo Foods uses high-quality, organic, non-GMO soybeans, resulting in exceptionally flavorful and firm tofu straight out of the package.
Spicing Up Your Tofu:
Don’t be shy with the seasonings! Tofu readily absorbs flavors, so don’t be afraid to experiment. Marinate it, coat it in spices, or try the crispy baked tofu recipe below.
My Go-To Baked Tofu Recipe
Baking is my favorite way to cook tofu. It’s simple, yields flavorful, firm cubes, and is perfect for adding to countless dishes.
Ingredients:
- 14 ounces extra-firm tofu, patted dry and cubed
- ½ tablespoon extra-virgin olive oil
- 2 tablespoons tamari or soy sauce
- ½ teaspoon sriracha
- 1 tablespoon cornstarch (optional, for extra crispy tofu)
Equipment:
- Tofu press (optional, but recommended)
- Baking sheet lined with parchment paper
Instructions:
- Press the Tofu (if needed): If using regular extra-firm tofu, press it for 20-30 minutes using a tofu press or the DIY method mentioned earlier.
- Preheat & Prep: Preheat your oven to 425°F (220°C) and line a baking sheet with parchment paper.
- Cube and Toss: Cut the pressed tofu into 1-inch cubes and toss them in a bowl with olive oil, tamari or soy sauce, and sriracha. For added crispiness, toss with cornstarch.
- Bake: Spread the tofu cubes evenly on the prepared baking sheet and bake for 20-25 minutes, or until browned and slightly crispy around the edges.
Enjoy! Serve your baked tofu warm as a topping for salads, grain bowls, noodles, or in stir-fries.
