Why You’ll Love This DIY Vanity
Let me tell you, ever since I added a floating makeup vanity to my closet makeover, it’s become my favorite part of the room. I used to do my makeup sitting on the floor, but now, with my DIY vanity, getting ready feels like a luxurious treat!

Building Your Vanity: A Step-by-Step Guide
Ready to get started? Let’s break down this DIY project into manageable steps.
Step 1: Cutting the Top and Bottom
Begin by cutting your two 1″ x 12″ pine boards down to 36″ long. These will form the top and bottom of your vanity.
Step 2: Creating the Sides
Next, take one of the leftover 1″ x 12″ scraps and cut two 4″ pieces. These will become the sides of your vanity, giving it structure and depth.
Step 3: Assembling the Vanity Box
- Apply wood glue along one edge of each 4″ side piece.
- Attach the side pieces to the ends of one of the 36″ long pieces using your brad nailer (or hammer and finish nails).
Step 4: Completing the Box
- Carefully flip over the assembled top, sides, and bottom.
- Run a bead of wood glue along the exposed edges of the 4″ side pieces.
- Position the remaining 36″ long piece on top, ensuring it aligns with the sides.
- Secure the final side using your nailer or hammer and nails.
- Use clamps to hold the box together tightly while the glue dries, ensuring a strong bond.
Step 5: Preparing the Front Panel and Support
- Cut your 1″ x 6″ board down to 36″ to create the drop-down front panel of your vanity.
- Cut the 2″ x 2″ furring strip down to 34 1/2″ – this will be the support that attaches to the wall.
Step 6: Adding a Touch of Color
Now it’s time to add your personal touch! Apply a few coats of paint to the vanity box and the 1″ x 6″ front panel. I love the look of a sleek semi-gloss black, but feel free to choose any color that inspires you!
Step 7: Mounting the Support
- On your wall, measure up from the floor to determine the height you’d like your vanity to sit. I recommend around 29 1/4″ from the floor to the top of the support.
- Use a stud finder to locate and mark your wall studs.
- Securely attach the 2″ x 2″ furring strip to the wall at your marked height using 3 1/2″ construction screws, making sure to drill into the studs.
- Double-check that the support is level.
Step 8: Adding Extra Support (Optional)
For added stability (especially if you have a heavier countertop material), consider adding corner braces to the back of the vanity where it will meet the wall studs.
Step 9: Attaching the Front Panel
- Lay your painted 1″ x 6″ front panel face down.
- Position and attach the hidden spring hinges to the bottom edge of the panel, ensuring they are set back slightly from the edge to allow for smooth opening and closing.
Step 10: Securing the Vanity to the Wall
- Carefully lift your vanity box and position it on top of the mounted 2″ x 2″ support.
- Pre-drill pilot holes through the back of the vanity box and into the support.
- Use 1 5/8″ construction screws to firmly attach the vanity to the wall support.
Step 11: Final Touches
- Open your front panel and attach the other side of the hinges to the inside of the vanity box.
- Install your chosen cabinet knob on the front panel.
- If you used corner braces, secure them to the wall studs.
- Fill any screw holes with wood filler (if desired) and touch up with paint.
Completing Your Vanity Setup
Congratulations, your DIY floating makeup vanity is complete! But don’t stop there. Now it’s time to make it your own.
- Mirror, Mirror on the Wall: Hang a beautiful mirror above your vanity – choose a size and style that complements your space.
- Let There Be Light: Install wall sconces or use stylish desk lamps to provide ample lighting for your makeup routine.
- Organizational Bliss: Use baskets, trays, or acrylic organizers inside the vanity to keep your makeup essentials neat and tidy.
