As an artist constantly inspired by nature, my backyard garden is my sanctuary. Over the years, it’s evolved from a simple plot to a thriving ecosystem, thanks in part to a sturdy and beautiful wooden fence. Let me guide you through how we built this essential garden element, a project that not only protects our plants but also enhances the aesthetic appeal of our outdoor space.
The Deer Dilemma and Planning the Fence
Living in an area with a healthy deer population means taking precautions to protect our gardens. While a simple 4-foot fence had sufficed in the past, we decided to upgrade to a more permanent 6-foot wooden fence for our expanding garden.
To deter burrowing critters, we planned to bury the bottom foot of the fence, effectively making it 5 feet high with an additional foot below ground. This design provides an adequate barrier against deer while also preventing smaller animals from digging their way in.

We opted for a 16′ x 32′ rectangular design to maximize space. Using untreated pine 4x4x8′ posts set in concrete, we spaced them 8 feet apart to support the fence panels. While pressure-treated lumber is recommended for longevity, we chose untreated pine for its natural appeal, prioritizing the health of our soil.
Building the Fence: From Posts to Panels
With the posts securely in place, we focused on attaching the fencing. We used galvanized steel fencing for its durability and clean look. Instead of wrestling with a single long sheet, we trimmed the fencing into manageable 8-foot sections for easier installation.

For added protection against smaller animals, we installed a layer of plastic fence netting along the bottom 18 inches of the fence. This extra layer acts as a deterrent for critters looking to squeeze through the larger openings of the steel fencing.

A Custom Gate for a Personalized Touch
No garden fence is complete without a gate, and we wanted ours to be both functional and stylish. We constructed a sturdy rectangular gate frame using pressure-treated lumber and added self-closing hinges for convenience.

To ensure accessibility for our little ones, we opted for an easy-to-maneuver latch. A small ramp made from spare pavers ensures a snug fit when the gate closes.
Finishing Touches and Reflections
We added 1×4 trim pieces vertically along the front of the posts and two horizontal pieces between each post (1×6 across the middle and 1×4 at the top). This detail not only enhances the fence’s visual appeal but also allows ample sunlight to reach our plants.
For a natural, weathered look, we chose a homemade stain made from steel wool dissolved in apple cider vinegar. This mixture creates a beautiful, long-lasting finish that enhances the wood’s natural grain.

Years later, our garden fence remains a source of pride. It’s a testament to the power of DIY and a constant reminder of the beauty that comes from blending functionality with aesthetics. While pressure-treated lumber would have been the more durable option, our untreated pine fence, meticulously stained and maintained, continues to thrive.
