As I’m writing this, my hands are stained with turmeric from dyeing ribbons for my almost-five-year-old’s birthday party. It might sound a little over-the-top, but I truly believe in bringing a touch of handmade magic to celebrations. This year, with a larger group of kids to entertain, we’re throwing a sustainable birthday party that’s easy on the planet and big on fun.
Embracing Simplicity and Sustainability
For us, a sustainable party means minimizing waste without sacrificing joy. From DIY decorations to thoughtful favors, it’s about making conscious choices that align with our values.
Location, Location, Location
Living in a bustling city like New York City has its charms, but hosting a large gathering in our small apartment isn’t one of them. So, we’re taking the party to a nearby park, where kids can enjoy fresh air and open space.
Keeping it Short and Sweet
We’ve opted for a shorter party duration, around 90 minutes, to keep the energy high and avoid overwhelming the little ones (and ourselves!).
Activities for Little Imaginations
Giant bubbles are always a hit, and Faye, our birthday girl, specifically requested a fairy march with hand-kites. We’ve also got some classic party games like “Fairy Says” and a silk scarf relay race up our sleeve.
Simple, Sustainable Decor
Mother Nature is providing the main decor with a backdrop of blue skies and green grass. We’ll add a few festive touches like a drop cloth for the table and a smattering of colorful, seasonal flowers.

Outdoor parties offer a naturally beautiful setting.
Food, Glorious Food (or Just a Little)
Instead of a full meal, we’ll have popcorn for snacking and berry-adorned cupcakes for a sweet treat. Guests are encouraged to bring their own water bottles, and we’ll have a water jug and a few recycled paper cups on hand.
Goodie Bags with a Purpose
We decided on goodie bags that are both fun and eco-conscious. Each child will receive a fairy-worthy colored pencil and a small bag of locally-sourced gummies.
The Gift of Creativity
Instead of a mountain of presents, we’ve asked guests to bring a drawing for Faye to create a keepsake book. We believe experiences and heartfelt gestures are the best gifts.
Party favors that spark creativity are always a win.
Finding What Works for You
Throwing a sustainable party is about finding a balance that feels right for your family. It doesn’t have to be perfect, just a little kinder to the planet. We’re excited to celebrate Faye’s birthday in a way that reflects our values and creates beautiful memories.
