Hey there, fellow art enthusiasts! Robert Kline here, and today, we’re stepping away from our usual craft projects to embark on a different kind of creative journey: a virtual tour of a tea plantation!
As an artist, I find inspiration in the most unexpected places, and this virtual experience transported me to the serene tea fields of Higashi-Sonogi in Nagasaki, Japan. Organized by the Nagasaki Ikedoki Tea Project, this virtual tour opened my eyes to the beauty and tranquility of tea cultivation.
A Glimpse into the World of Japanese Tea
The tour began at an elevated tea field, overlooking the breathtaking Omura Bay. Our host, Matsu-san, with his infectious enthusiasm, introduced us to a variety of teas, including the unique Shiraore, a stem tea known as kukicha in other parts of Japan.

Matsu-san, a true tea aficionado, shared fascinating insights into the history, geography, and cultural significance of tea in Nagasaki. He spoke about the Ikedoki Tea Project’s mission to promote peace through tea, a powerful message resonating from a place marked by the history of World War II.
From Tea Fields to Factory: The Journey of Tea Production
We were then taken on a virtual tour of the tea factory. Matsu-san patiently explained the workings of each machine, from the initial processing of tea leaves to the final packaging. The factory, with its intricate machinery, highlighted the blend of traditional techniques and modern technology in tea production.

The Art of Tea Tasting
Next came the highlight of the tour: tea tasting! We were treated to a selection of teas, including a deep-steamed tamaryokucha, a refreshing genmaicha, and a vibrant matcha. Each sip was an explosion of flavors, transporting me to the heart of the tea fields.

Finding Inspiration in Unexpected Places
The tour concluded with a mesmerizing sunset over the tea fields, a truly awe-inspiring sight. This virtual journey, much like the creative process, reminded me that inspiration can be found in the most unexpected places.
