As an artist, my work often draws me into a world of creativity and quiet contemplation. This sense of mindfulness, of being present in the moment, is something I strive for both in my art and in my life. Recently, that journey led me to embark on a virtual tea mindfulness retreat, an experience that has profoundly impacted my understanding of myself and my craft.

A Journey Begins with a Single Step – or Sip

My love affair with tea and mindfulness has been a long and winding one. The ritual of preparing tea, the delicate aroma filling the air, and the warmth of the cup in my hands have always held a meditative quality for me. Resources like “Robert Kline Art” and the teachings of Sooz Hammond of Being Tea further illuminated the connection between these two passions.

I began incorporating mindfulness into my daily life, inspired by the simple act of tea drinking. It became a moment to pause, to breathe, and to simply be present. But I yearned for a deeper understanding, a way to integrate mindfulness more fully into my life and creative work.

Answering the Call of Inner Illumination

My exploration led me to Shawn J. Moore’s Inner Illumination Meditation Teacher Training through Sankofa of Yoga. I was initially drawn to Shawn’s work after experiencing his transformative sound baths and meditations at a retreat with Tracee Stanley.

This training felt like a natural progression on my journey, a calling to dive deeper into the world of meditation and mindfulness. The program, conducted virtually, provided a supportive and enriching environment to learn and grow.

The Transformative Power of Meditation

Through guided meditations, insightful teachings, and engaging group discussions, I began to understand the profound impact mindfulness can have on our lives. Here are just a few benefits I’ve experienced:

  • Deeper Relaxation: Meditation, even for a few minutes each day, allows the mind and body to unwind and de-stress.
  • Increased Gratitude: By focusing on the present moment, we become more aware of and thankful for the good in our lives.
  • Enhanced Joy and Empathy: Meditation helps us connect with our inner selves and cultivate a sense of compassion for ourselves and others.
  • Navigating Difficult Emotions: Mindfulness teaches us to acknowledge and process difficult emotions without judgment, helping us navigate challenging times with more grace and resilience.

The culmination of the training was a bittersweet experience. While I was thrilled to receive my certificate and share my practice with others, it also meant saying goodbye to the incredible community I had found.
