Have you ever looked at a book and seen beyond the words and pages? In this virtual book sculpture class, my 7th-grade students embarked on a journey of transforming ordinary books into extraordinary works of art. This project, completed entirely online, became a therapeutic and engaging experience that fostered creativity and connection during a time when we were physically apart.
Discovering the Art of Book Sculptures
Our virtual adventure began with exploring inspirational examples of book sculptures.

We delved into discussions about what defines a book sculpture and how these captivating pieces were created. To further spark their imaginations, students curated their own digital collections of book sculpture images.
Feeling the Book, Envisioning the Art
Next, we shifted our focus inward. I asked my students to reflect on their emotional connection to books. This reflective exercise encouraged them to see books as more than just vessels of information; they became sources of comfort, inspiration, and even artistic potential.
To solidify this concept, we watched a captivating video by book sculpture master Daniel Lai. Through his art, we witnessed the power of transforming books into intricate sculptures, blurring the lines between literature and visual art.
The Making of a Successful Book Sculpture
With a newfound appreciation for the art form, we honed in on the elements that contribute to a successful book sculpture. Analyzing different techniques and styles, students developed a critical eye for craftsmanship, design, and the ability to convey emotions through this unique medium.
From Theory to Practice
Armed with inspiration and knowledge, it was time to get hands-on. I provided students with a variety of book sculpture tutorials, empowering them to explore different approaches and discover their own artistic voices.

This experimental phase was buzzing with excitement as they folded, shaped, and molded their books, learning through trial and error.
Bringing Visions to Life
With a foundation of skills and a burst of creativity, my students embarked on their final book sculpture projects. Witnessing their visions come to life, transforming discarded books into stunning sculptures, filled me with immense pride.

The Power of Feedback in a Virtual Setting
To replicate the valuable experience of in-person critiques, we held a virtual exhibition. Students shared photos of their creations, providing constructive feedback and celebrating each other’s accomplishments. This online platform fostered a sense of community and encouraged artistic growth.
Adding a Personal Touch
To bridge the distance between us, I introduced a final challenge: photograph their book sculpture in their favorite place at home, incorporating a selfie, a beloved pet, or a family member. The results were heartwarming.

Through these images, we caught a glimpse into their lives, strengthening our virtual bond and reminding us of the power of art to connect us.
A Virtual Success Story
This virtual book sculpture class exceeded my expectations. It proved that even in the face of unprecedented challenges, creativity thrives, connections are forged, and the transformative power of art prevails.
