Craft Your Own Leather Corncob Keychain: A Step-by-Step Virtual Workshop

At Robert Kline Art, we believe in the power of hands-on creativity. That’s why we’re thrilled to bring the spirit of the Woodland Cultural Centre’s popular Corncob Keychain Workshop right to your home! While we may not be able to gather in person just yet, we can still connect through the art of crafting.

This workshop, typically recommended for ages 12 and up due to the use of sharp needles, provides a wonderful opportunity for families to learn a new skill together. Don’t worry if you can’t make it to the live event – we’ll be sending out recordings to all who register!

Gathering Your Supplies

Before we begin our crafting journey, let’s gather our materials. Think of this as preparing your artist’s palette! You’ll need:

  • 1 String of Sinew: This strong thread will hold your keychain together.
  • 1 Leather Corncob Steam (Roll and Glue): This pre-shaped piece forms the base of your keychain.
  • 1 Leather Tie: A stylish addition to adorn your keychain.
  • 1 Leather Needle: This special needle is designed to pierce through leather. If you don’t have one, a sturdy needle with a sharp point will work.
  • Colored Beads: Add a pop of personality with beads of your choice.
  • Metal Keychain Loop: This is what you’ll attach your keys to.

Expert Tip: “When choosing your beads, consider colors and patterns that reflect your personal style,” says renowned crafting expert [Insert Fictional Expert Name], author of [Insert Fictional Book Title]. “This is a chance to let your creativity shine!”

Crafting Your Corncob Keychain: A Step-by-Step Guide

Now, let’s dive into the heart of our project. Follow these steps, and soon you’ll have a beautiful, handmade leather keychain to call your own:

  1. Prepare the Corncob: Begin by carefully rolling the leather corncob steam following the natural curve. Apply a thin layer of glue along the edge to secure it in place.
  2. Thread the Needle: Cut a comfortable length of sinew and thread it through the eye of your leather needle.
  3. Attach the Tie: Fold the leather tie in half and place the folded end at the top of the corncob. Carefully stitch it in place using your needle and sinew.
  4. Beading Time: Now comes the fun part! Thread beads onto your sinew, creating a pattern or design that speaks to you.
  5. Securing the Loop: Once you’ve added your beads, carefully thread the needle through the metal keychain loop.
  6. Finishing Touches: Stitch the remaining sinew back through a few beads to secure the loop and tie a knot close to the beads. Trim any excess sinew.
