Have you ever been mesmerized by the dance of molten glass transforming into exquisite art? At Robert Kline Art, we’re passionate about sharing the magic of glassblowing, and now, we’re thrilled to introduce you to a revolutionary way to experience this ancient craft: Virtual Glassblowing!
Bridging Tradition and Technology
Imagine stepping into a virtual world where you can feel the heat of the furnace and hear the clinking of tools, all from the comfort of your home. That’s the incredible experience that Pittsburgh Glass Center (PGC) and Carnegie Mellon University’s Entertainment Technology Center (ETC) have created with their groundbreaking virtual glassblowing workshop.
This collaboration has birthed a unique educational tool that allows anyone, regardless of their location or prior experience, to learn the art of glassblowing. It’s a testament to how technology can breathe new life into traditional art forms, making them more accessible and engaging.

Donning the VR headset, you’re transported to a 3D virtual hot shop, an immersive digital replica of a real glassblowing studio. Your guide, a friendly animated flame named Blaze (PGC’s mascot), leads you through each step of creating a beautiful blown glass orb.
From Gathering to Glory Hole: A Virtual Journey
You’ll feel the virtual heat of the furnace as you gather molten glass on the end of a blowpipe. Blaze will be there every step of the way, offering guidance as you learn to shape and mold the glowing orb. You’ll even get to experiment with adding color and finally, with a satisfying tap, knock the finished piece off the pipe.

More than just a Simulation
The magic of this virtual experience lies in its ability to replicate the tactile and sensory aspects of glassblowing. The team at ETC, known as Prism Beam, meticulously studied the craft, even attending glassblowing workshops at PGC, to ensure the virtual experience captured the essence of this art form.
“Despite the challenge of recreating the physicality of molten glass in a VR headset, we successfully developed a visually and acoustically immersive VR experience that represents the key steps in glassblowing,” says the Prism Beam team.

Expanding the Reach of Art
Valerie Bundy, PGC program director, highlights the far-reaching impact of this innovation: “This is an exciting use of technology… I’m thrilled about the potential to reach more students and spark their curiosity for glass and the glassmaking process before they even visit a glass studio.”
This sentiment resonates deeply with our mission at Robert Kline Art. We believe in the power of art to inspire and connect, and virtual glassblowing is a testament to that belief. It breaks down geographical barriers and makes the beauty of glass art accessible to everyone.
