A Night of Craft Beer in the Big Apple: From IPAs to Sour Ales

It’s no secret that New York City pulsates with an energy unlike anywhere else. As someone who frequents the city’s hidden gems and bustling streets, I’m always drawn back to its vibrant craft beer scene. Recently, I found myself on a whirlwind adventure, indulging in a trifecta of beery goodness that left me buzzing with excitement.

A Double IPA Paradise at The Blind Tiger

My journey began at the legendary Blind Tiger, a true haven for beer enthusiasts. The occasion? A tap takeover by none other than Other Half Brewing, a name synonymous with exceptional Double IPAs. I met up with my beer-loving comrade, the BeerSensei, and we dove headfirst into “Other Half, the Whole Story” – a lineup of 26 glorious brews, half of which proudly boasted the coveted “DDH” (Double Dry Hopped) designation.

From the hazy depths of Dream Layers to the cosmic allure of Space Hallucinations, each sip was a symphony of hoppy aromas and complex flavors. We sampled our way through a spectrum of variations on classic recipes, each showcasing the brewery’s masterful use of hops. The atmosphere was electric, filled with passionate conversations and the clinking of glasses as fellow beer aficionados reveled in the experience.

Lights, Camera, Brewmaster!

With our palates tantalized, we tore ourselves away from The Blind Tiger, but only briefly. We had tickets to see “Brewmaster,” a documentary offering a glimpse into the world of craft beer through the eyes of a lawyer turned aspiring brewer and a beer educator on a quest to become a Master Cicerone.

The film was a captivating watch, highlighting the dedication, artistry, and sheer grit required to succeed in the competitive world of brewing. While the pacing felt a tad lengthy, perhaps fueled by our eagerness to return to the Other Half tap takeover, it provided valuable insight into the passion that fuels the industry.

A Wicked Good Beer Dinner

Reunited with the remaining Other Half offerings, I was joined by my daughter, Caroline, for the grand finale – a beer dinner hosted by Wicked Weed Brewing. The acquisition of Wicked Weed by AB-InBev had sent ripples through the craft beer community, and I was curious to see how the brewery was navigating this new chapter.

The setting, Little Owl Townhouse, was as charming as its name suggests. We were greeted with an impressive spread of hors d’oeuvres, perfectly complemented by the fig-aged La Bonte. As we mingled with fellow attendees, I had the opportunity to chat with Walt Dickinson, one of the founders of Wicked Weed. He expressed enthusiasm for the resources AB-InBev provided while acknowledging the mixed reactions from consumers.

The dinner itself was a testament to Wicked Weed’s dedication to pushing the boundaries of flavor. Each course was a carefully crafted pairing, showcasing the brewery’s prowess in sour and fruited beers. From the apricot-infused Golden Angel served alongside lamb carpaccio to the decadent raspberry Medora accompanying a caramel-seeded Calabasa, every bite was an explosion of taste.

A Toast to Craft Beer Adventures

As our Lyft whisked us back home, I couldn’t help but reflect on the incredible journey I had just experienced. From the hoppy heights of Other Half’s IPAs to the complex depths of Wicked Weed’s sour ales, it was a night that celebrated the creativity, passion, and camaraderie that make the craft beer world so special.

So, the next time you find yourself in New York City, I encourage you to embark on your own craft beer adventure. Explore the city’s hidden taprooms, engage in conversations with passionate brewers, and allow yourself to be captivated by the world of artisanal brews.
