Upcycled Elegance: Crafting a Unique Wood Burned Jewelry Box

How to use woodburning tools to create a modern design in the top of an old silverware box.

Have you ever stumbled upon an item at a flea market or antique shop that seemed destined for greatness? That’s how I felt when I found this unassuming wooden silverware box. Sure, it was designed to hold forks and knives, but I saw its potential for something far more glamorous: a home for my cherished silver jewelry.

In this post, I’ll guide you through my creative process of transforming this simple box into a unique, wood-burned masterpiece. It’s a project that combines the charm of upcycling with the satisfaction of handmade art. Whether you’re a seasoned DIY enthusiast or just starting out, this tutorial is for you.

Gathering Inspiration for a Custom Design

Every great project begins with a spark of inspiration. For this jewelry box makeover, two ideas came to mind:

  1. Woodburning: I had recently added a woodburning kit to my crafting arsenal and was eager to explore its creative possibilities.
  2. Geometric Designs: I was captivated by the minimalist, geometric art of Jaime Derringer, founder of Design Milk. Her “#ashapeaday” project on Instagram, showcasing a new shape daily, became my design muse.

Prepping the Canvas: From Silverware to Jewelry Box

Before embarking on the artistic transformation, I prepped the box:

  1. Cleaning: A gentle cleaning removed any residue or grime accumulated from its time at the shop.
  2. Sketching: Using a pencil and ruler, I experimented with various geometric designs directly on the box lid. The winning design was inspired by my sunroom’s floor pattern – a playful, off-center composition.
  3. Transferring: Once satisfied with the sketch, I recreated it on the box lid using a red china marker. This provided better visibility than a pencil without being overly permanent.

Mastering the Art of Woodburning

The initial stages of woodburning: outlining the design with a red china marker.

Woodburning, also known as pyrography, is the art of decorating wood by burning a design into its surface. Here are some key things to remember:

  • Patience is Key: Achieving even burns takes time and a steady hand. Don’t rush the process.
  • Temperature Matters: The woodburning tool needs to be hot – and I mean hot-hot-hot. Allow it to heat up fully before starting, and be prepared to re-burn areas for a consistent look.
  • Control Your Strokes: Slow passes result in deeper burns, while quick strokes create lighter marks. Experiment to find what works best for your design.

For my design, I opted for clean, bold lines. To guide the woodburning tool and create a subtle groove, I lightly traced over the china marker lines with a ballpoint pen.

The Unveiling: A Transformed Treasure

After a couple of hours of focused woodburning, the transformation was complete. The once plain box was now adorned with a unique, eye-catching design. The contrast between the burned lines and the natural wood grain created a stunning visual effect.

The finished design: a harmonious blend of modern and rustic aesthetics.

To ensure the box’s interior was free of dust and debris, I gave it a thorough vacuuming before adding my silver jewelry collection.
