Crafting Unique Wood and Resin Jewelry: A Step-by-Step Guide

Hey there, fellow craft enthusiasts! Robert Kline here, and today, I’m excited to share a passion project of mine: creating stunning wood and resin jewelry. These pieces are always a hit at craft fairs, and I often get asked about my process. It does require some power tools and a bit of elbow grease, but trust me, the results are incredibly rewarding. So, let’s gather our supplies and dive into the world of wood and resin jewelry making!

Gathering Your Materials: What You’ll Need

Before we start, let’s make sure we have everything at hand. Here’s a list of essential supplies:

Resin Supplies:

  • Large Mold: Choose a mold at least 1/4 inch deeper than your wood slices. Square or rectangular molds work well.
  • Mold Release: This prevents the resin from sticking to the mold.
  • Clear Craft Resin: Opt for a high-quality resin that cures hard and clear. I prefer Resin Obsession’s Super Clear resin for its durability and bubble-free finish.
  • Mixing Cups and Stirrers: Accurate measuring and thorough mixing are crucial for resin.
  • Tree Wood Slice: Select a slice with interesting grain patterns and bark for added character.
  • Resin Colors: Experiment with opaque or transparent resin colors to create unique effects.
  • Sandpaper in Various Grits: You’ll need a range of grits (80, 150, 250, 800, 1000, 1500, and 2000) for shaping and polishing.

Tools:

  • Table Saw: A table saw or a smaller tool like a Dremel Moto-Saw will help with precise wood cuts.
  • Belt Sander: This is key for shaping and smoothing the resin and wood.
  • Eye Hook Screws: These are used to attach your pendant to a chain or cord.
  • Necklace Chain or Cord: Choose a chain or cord that complements your pendant design.
  • Power Drill: Necessary for adding a hole for the eye hook if your pendant top is resin.
  • Jewelry Adhesive: Provides extra security for attaching the eye hook.
  • Resin Polishing Kit: Enhances the clarity and shine of the resin.

Safety Gear:

  • Safety Glasses: Protect your eyes from dust and debris when using power tools.
  • Dust Mask: Essential when sanding resin and wood.
  • Gloves: Protect your hands during the initial cutting and sanding phases.

Let’s Get Crafting! A Step-by-Step Guide:

Step 1: Preparing the Mold:

Begin by prepping your mold with a mold release agent. Apply a thin, even layer, ensuring you cover the entire surface area. This step is crucial for easy demolding later.

Step 2: Choosing and Cutting the Wood:

When selecting your wood slice, look for pieces with interesting grain patterns and bark. Thinner slices around 1 inch thick are easier to work with. Measure and mark the desired size of your wood pieces, ensuring they fit within your mold. Use a table saw or a similar tool to carefully cut the wood into your desired shapes.

Step 3: Arranging the Wood in the Mold:

Place your wood pieces bark-side down in the mold. Experiment with different arrangements to achieve the look you desire. Remember, there’s no right or wrong way to do this!

Step 4: Pouring the First Resin Layer:

Mix approximately 1 1/2 ounces of clear resin (adjust the amount based on your mold size). Pour a thin layer of resin into the mold, covering the bottom completely. Gently place your arranged wood pieces back into the resin, ensuring they are fully submerged. If the wood floats, you can use small weights to hold it down during curing. Allow this layer to cure for 24 hours.

Step 5: Adding Color and the Second Resin Layer:

Now comes the fun part – adding color! Mix a batch of colored resin, using the resin calculator to determine the right amount. Pour the colored resin over the cured first layer, making sure to fill any gaps around the wood. Again, allow this layer to cure completely for at least 24 hours.

Step 6: Demolding Your Creation:

After the resin has cured, carefully demold your creation. You can usually do this by gently twisting the mold and pushing from the bottom. The resin should release cleanly, revealing your beautiful wood and resin block.

Step 7: Planning and Cutting Your Pendants:

Now, it’s time to shape your block into individual pendants! Use a pencil to mark your desired pendant shapes on the resin block. Using a table saw or a similar tool, carefully cut along your markings. Don’t worry if the cuts are rough; we’ll refine them in the next step.

Step 8: Shaping and Sanding with the Belt Sander:

Safety First: Remember to prioritize safety when using power tools like the belt sander. Always wear safety glasses and a dust mask. Avoid wearing loose clothing or jewelry that could get caught in the machine.

Start by sanding the face of each pendant to create a smooth and flush surface between the wood and resin. Use a firm grip and move the pendant slowly and evenly across the belt sander. Gradually shape the edges of your pendants, using light pressure and making sure to keep your fingers a safe distance from the belt.

Tips for Using the Belt Sander:

  • I prefer to use the belt sander dry, but if your sander allows for wet sanding, it can help minimize dust.
  • If you notice the resin getting warm, pause and let it cool down to prevent softening.
  • Remember, slow and steady wins the race! Don’t rush the process.

Step 9: Hand Sanding for a Polished Finish:

Once you’re satisfied with the shape of your pendants, it’s time for hand sanding. This step is crucial for achieving a smooth and polished look. Work your way through the different grits of sandpaper, starting with the coarsest (80 grit) and gradually moving to the finest (2000 grit).

Tip: Wet sanding with the finer grits (800-2000) can help achieve an exceptionally smooth finish.

Step 10: Polishing the Resin (Optional):

If you’ve used transparent or translucent resin colors and want to enhance their clarity and shine, you can use a resin polishing compound. Apply a small amount of polish to a soft cloth and buff the resin in circular motions. Avoid polishing the wood as it can cause discoloration.

Step 11: Adding the Finishing Touches:

To transform your pendants into wearable pieces, it’s time to add the findings. If the top of your pendant is wood, you can simply screw an eye hook directly into it. If the top is resin, use a power drill to carefully drill a small hole and secure the eye hook with a dab of jewelry adhesive.

Step 12: Show off Your Creations!

Congratulations! You’ve created beautiful, one-of-a-kind wood and resin jewelry. Thread your pendants onto your favorite chains or cords and proudly wear or share your creations.

Final Thoughts and Inspiration:

Creating wood and resin jewelry is a fulfilling journey of experimentation and creativity. Don’t be afraid to try new techniques, experiment with different wood types, and explore a variety of resin colors.
