Step 1: Download the Free Paper Cut Light Box Templates
Head over to the Robert Kline Art free resource library and download Design #409. This file contains everything you need to get started, including customizable light box design layers and templates for a DIY cardstock frame.
Step 2: Customize Your Design
The magic begins! You can use the pre-designed layers or unleash your creativity by adding a personalized focal point to the customizable layer. Look for images with solid, connected areas for the best results. Remember, simplicity is key when working with light boxes.
Step 3: Cut Your Designs with Precision
Using your Cricut machine and the appropriate settings for intricate cuts, carefully cut out each layer of your design. For the DIY frame, select the “Medium Cardstock” setting with “More” pressure. Don’t forget to use a brayer to ensure the cardstock adheres firmly to the mat.
Step 4: Assemble Your Masterpiece
- Glass Shadow Box Assembly:
- Clean the glass panel of your shadow box thoroughly.
- Layer your cut pieces face down, starting with the bottom layer and working your way to the top.
- Secure each layer with glue dots, offsetting them slightly for each layer to prevent sagging.
- DIY Cardstock Frame Assembly:
- Score and fold the frame pieces according to the template.
- Glue the tabs to assemble the front and back frame sections.
- Attach the “shelf” pieces inside the back frame to support the design layers.
Step 5: Illuminate Your Creation
- Glass Shadow Box Lighting:
- Carefully cut a small notch in the back of the shadow box for the LED light wire.
- Attach the LED strip lights around the inside perimeter of the frame, securing them with the adhesive backing.
- DIY Cardstock Frame Lighting:
- Attach either LED strip lights or fairy lights around the inside of the back frame, using glue dots to secure them.
Step 6: Admire Your Work!
Congratulations! You’ve created a stunning paper cut light box. Now it’s time to find the perfect spot to display your masterpiece.
