Start Your Seedlings Green: DIY Newspaper Seed Pots

Hey there, fellow garden enthusiasts! Spring is just around the corner, and for those of us with a green thumb, that means it’s time to start thinking about seedlings. Now, I know what you’re thinking – seed starting means shelling out money on expensive peat pots and trays, right? Not necessarily!

Here at Robert Kline Art, we’re all about embracing creativity and resourcefulness. That’s why I’m excited to share a fantastically frugal and eco-friendly alternative: homemade newspaper seed starting pots. Yes, you read that right – we’re upcycling those old newspapers into little cradles for our future plants!

Why Newspaper Pots Are a Win-Win

This isn’t just about saving a few bucks (though that’s always a bonus!). Newspaper pots are:

  • Budget-Friendly: Why buy when you can DIY with materials you already have?
  • Eco-Conscious: Give those newspapers a second life and reduce waste.
  • Garden-Friendly: The pots decompose naturally in the soil, minimizing transplant shock for your seedlings.

Plus, there’s a certain satisfaction that comes from transforming something ordinary into something useful. It’s the Robert Kline Art way!

What You Need for This Crafty Project

Ready to get your hands a little dirty? Here’s your supply list – I bet you have most (if not all) of these items already:

  • Old Newspapers: Those Sunday editions you never quite got to? Perfect!
  • Scissors: Any sharp pair will do.
  • A Small Can: A standard 6-ounce tomato paste can is ideal, but a shot glass or small jar works too. This will be your molding tool.

Let’s Get Rolling: Crafting Your Newspaper Pots

  1. Prep Your Newspaper Strips: Take two sheets of newspaper (four pages total) and cut them lengthwise into thirds. You’ll now have three long strips.

  2. Wrap and Roll: Place your can horizontally at the edge of a newspaper strip, leaving about an inch of overhang. Start rolling the can away from you, wrapping the newspaper snugly around it.

  3. Form the Base: Once you reach the end of the strip, fold the excess newspaper at the bottom edge over the base of the can. Continue tucking and creasing the folds until the entire base is secured. Don’t worry if it’s not perfect – a little hole in the center actually helps with drainage!

  4. Flip and Secure: Carefully flip the can over so the folded base is facing down. Press down gently on the base to create a firm crease.

  5. Pop Out Your Pot: Gently slide the can out of the newspaper pot. Voila! You’ve created a biodegradable seedling starter.

  6. Repeat and Rejoice: Now, channel your inner production line and repeat the process until you have enough pots for all your seedling dreams.

Newspaper Pots: Tips and Tricks From Robert Kline Art

  • Sturdy and Ready: Don’t be fooled by their humble appearance! Once filled with moist seed starting mix, these pots hold their shape surprisingly well.

  • Transplant Time: When it’s time to plant your seedlings in the garden, you can put the entire pot directly into the ground. The newspaper will naturally break down in the soil.

  • Overwatering Alert: While sturdy, newspaper is still paper. Avoid overwatering, as this can cause the pots to disintegrate.

  • Compost Champions: Once your seedlings are happily settled in the garden, toss those used newspaper pots into your compost bin – they make excellent brown material.

There you have it! A simple, sustainable, and satisfying way to kickstart your gardening season. It’s amazing what a little ingenuity and a stack of old newspapers can do.
