Hey there, fellow craft enthusiasts! Remember the macrame fever that swept through our last tutorial? Well, get ready for another dose of knotted goodness because we’re diving into the world of macrame wall hangings once again! Today, I’m thrilled to share an even easier DIY project that’s perfect for beginners. Don’t be fooled by its simplicity though, this macrame wall hanging packs a stylish punch with its intricate patterns.
Gather Your Macrame Supplies
Before we embark on our knotting adventure, let’s gather our essential tools and materials. Here’s what you’ll need:
- Cotton Rope: My personal favorite is cotton rope, available at most craft stores or online. Choose a thickness that suits your desired look – I opted for a chunky 5mm rope for this project.
- Wooden Dowel or Copper Pipe: This will serve as the base of your wall hanging. I love the rustic charm of a wooden dowel, but a copper pipe adds a touch of industrial chic.
- String or Twine: You’ll need a sturdy string to hang your finished masterpiece.
- Scissors: A sharp pair of scissors is crucial for clean cuts.
- Optional: A measuring tape comes in handy if you prefer precise measurements, but it’s not strictly necessary for this project.
Preparing Your Macrame Cords
Get ready for the most “complex” part of this project (don’t worry, it’s a breeze!):
-
Measure Twice, Cut Once: Determine the desired length of your macrame wall hanging and double that measurement. Then, double it again to account for the folded loops we’ll create later. For instance, I envisioned a 120cm wall hanging, so I cut my cords to approximately 480cm each.
Pro Tip: For intricate macrame patterns, a good rule of thumb is to cut your cords three to four times the desired length. However, this simple pattern requires less cord.
-
Cut Your Cords: Use your measured cord as a guide to cut 12 cords of equal length. Remember, you can always adjust the number of cords, but make sure you have an even number.
-
Secure Your Dowel: Tie your hanging string securely to your dowel or pipe. Find a comfortable spot to work, whether it’s propping the dowel against a table or hanging it on the wall. I find hanging it gives me a better view of the emerging pattern.
Mastering the Larks Head Knot: Attaching Your Cords
- Creating the Loop: Take one of your long cords and fold it in half, forming a loop at one end.
- Securing the Cord: Place the loop behind your dowel or pipe. Bring the loose ends of the cord through the loop from front to back, and pull them through to tighten the knot.
- Repeat and Adjust: Repeat the Larks Head Knot for all 12 cords. Once they’re all attached, slide the knots along the dowel to ensure they’re evenly spaced.
Unleash the Square Knot: Building the Pattern
-
The Foundation of Intrigue: The Square Knot is our bread and butter for this macrame wall hanging. Let’s start by taking the first four cords on the left.
-
First Half of the Square Knot: Take the fourth cord (the rightmost of the four) and fold it over the middle two cords and under the first cord (the leftmost). This forms a loop on the right side. Pass the first cord through this loop, going from back to front.
-
Second Half of the Square Knot: Now, mirror the movement. Fold the first cord over the middle two and under the fourth cord. This creates a loop on the left. Bring the fourth cord through this loop, again going from back to front.
-
One Square Knot Down: Congratulations, you’ve just completed one Square Knot! Repeat steps 2 and 3 to create a second Square Knot with the same four cords.
-
Across the Row: Continue creating two Square Knots with each group of four cords across the dowel.
Pro Tip: If you’re using a slightly curved dowel like mine, adjust the knot tension to ensure your macrame hangs evenly.
Row by Row: Expanding Your Macrame Masterpiece
-
Second Row and Beyond: For the second row, we’ll create a cascading effect. Take cords 3, 4, 5, and 6 (the two middle cords from each of the previous knots) and create two Square Knots. Leave a bit of space between the knots in each row for a relaxed look. Repeat this process across the row, leaving the outermost two cords on each side hanging free.
-
Third Row and Repetition: The third row mirrors the first. Start with the four cords on the leftmost side, create two Square Knots, and work your way across.
-
Finding the Perfect Length: Continue adding rows using this pattern until your macrame reaches your desired length. I went for a dramatic look with 12 rows, but you can customize yours to fit your space perfectly.
Finishing Touches: Trimming for Perfection
Once you’ve reached your desired length, you’ll notice the cords hang at different lengths. This is where you can unleash your creativity! Use your scissors to trim the ends, creating fringes, slopes, or any design your heart desires.
