Illuminate Your Hanukkah with a Handmade Candle Workshop

Hanukkah, the Festival of Lights, is almost here! As an artist who finds joy in the handmade, I can’t think of a better way to celebrate than by crafting our own beautiful candles to light up the nights.

While lighting the menorah is a tradition deeply rooted in history, there’s a special kind of magic in taking it a step further and pouring our own candles. It’s an act of creation that connects us to the heart of the celebration: spreading light, warmth, and joy.

This year, let’s add a personal touch to our Hanukkah celebrations with a virtual candle-making workshop. Whether you’re a seasoned crafter or just starting, I’ll guide you through each step, sharing tips and techniques I’ve gathered over the years.

Gather Your Supplies

Creating your own candle-making kit is easier than you might think! Most of these materials can be found online or at your local craft store. Here’s what you’ll need:

Wax: Soy wax is my top choice for candle making. It’s natural, burns cleanly, and releases a lovely fragrance.

Wicks: Choose wicks specifically designed for the size and type of candle you’re making.

Fragrance Oils: This is where you can get creative! Opt for traditional Hanukkah scents like cinnamon, frankincense, or myrrh, or explore other blends that speak to you.

Colorants: Add a touch of color to your candles with dye blocks or liquid candle dyes.

Double Boiler: A simple setup with a pot and a heat-safe bowl works perfectly for melting the wax.

Jars or Containers: Let your creativity shine! Choose from glass jars, teacups, vintage tins, or even hollowed-out fruit rinds for a unique touch.

Other Essentials: Don’t forget heat-resistant gloves, measuring cups and spoons, a stirring spoon, and a thermometer to monitor the wax temperature.

Let’s Get Crafting!

Now that you have your supplies ready, it’s time to dive into the candle-making process.

Step 1: Prepare Your Workspace: Cover your work surface with parchment paper or newspaper for easy cleanup.

Step 2: Melt the Wax: Fill the bottom pot of your double boiler with water and bring it to a simmer. Place the wax flakes in the top bowl, ensuring the water doesn’t touch the bottom of the bowl. Stir occasionally until the wax is completely melted.

Step 3: Add Fragrance and Color: Once the wax is melted, remove it from the heat. Let it cool slightly before adding your chosen fragrance oil and colorant. Stir gently to ensure even distribution.

Step 4: Prep the Wicks: Secure the wicks to the bottom of your chosen containers using a wick sticker or a dab of hot glue. Center the wick and use a clothespin or pencil to keep it upright.

Step 5: Pour the Candles: Carefully pour the melted wax into your prepared containers, leaving about half an inch of space at the top.

Step 6: Cool and Cure: Allow the candles to cool and harden completely. This may take several hours or overnight. Once the candles are solid, trim the wicks to about ¼ inch.

Tips for Candle-Making Success

  • Temperature is Key: Overheating the wax can affect its scent throw and burn quality. Use a thermometer and follow the recommended temperature guidelines for your chosen wax.
  • Experiment with Scents: Don’t be afraid to mix and match fragrance oils to create your own unique blends.
  • Get Creative with Embellishments: Once the candles have cooled, decorate them with dried flowers, herbs, or glitter for an extra special touch.
