Gather Your Supplies
Before we dive into this exciting makeover, let’s gather our materials:
- A plain storage ottoman: Don’t worry about the current look; we’re going for a complete transformation!
- 2 yards of fabric: Choose a pattern and texture that complements your style.
- Piping (optional): A contrasting or coordinating color/pattern adds a touch of sophistication.
- Staple gun and staples: Your trusty companions for securing the fabric.
- Upholstery tacks and a hammer: For a polished and professional finish.
- Sewing machine or hand sewing needle and thread: You’ll need one of these for the lid (if you choose to incorporate piping).
Time to Transform: The Base
- Measure and Cut: Measure the width of one side of your ottoman’s base. Multiply that measurement by four and add six inches. Use this final measurement to cut your fabric.
- Secure the Fabric: Place the ottoman on its side on the wrong side of your fabric. Pull the fabric up and over the top, securing it with a few staples.
- Tack and Tighten: Tightly pull the other edge of the fabric around the ottoman, folding the raw edge under as you go. Secure this edge with upholstery tacks, starting with one in the center, then each corner, and finally filling in the spaces. Make sure the fabric is taut as you work.
- Staple the Bottom: Flip the ottoman over and tuck the raw edges under. Staple all along the bottom edge, securing the fabric. You can either tuck and staple around the feet or loosen them and tuck the fabric underneath.
- Finish the Top Edge: Stand the ottoman upright. Tuck and fold the raw edges of the fabric under along the top edge and staple them to the inside of the ottoman.
Adding Polish: The Lid
- Create a Pattern: Carefully slice the existing fabric off the ottoman lid, keeping it intact to use as a pattern.
- Cut New Fabric: Using the old fabric as a guide, cut out one square center piece and four edge strips from your new fabric.
- Sew the Piping (Optional): If you’re using piping, sandwich it between the edges of the center piece and each edge piece. Stitch along the perimeter. Then, stitch the ends of the edge pieces together to form a complete circle.
- Attach the New Cover: Center the new fabric cover over the lid, folding the edges under. Staple all the way around the inside edge, keeping the fabric taut.
You Did It!
Congratulations! Step back and admire your handiwork. That drab ottoman is now a stylish and functional piece of furniture that reflects your personal touch. This project is a perfect example of how a little effort can completely transform a space. Why not try experimenting with different fabrics and embellishments to match your decor?
