Hey there, fellow craft enthusiasts! Robert Kline, your friendly neighborhood art aficionado, here. Remember that box of forgotten photographs we talked about? The one tucked away in the back of your closet? Well, today, we’re going to give those treasured memories the home they deserve by creating a beautiful, handcrafted photo album.

This isn’t just any photo album, though. We’re crafting a soft, romantic album perfect for showcasing your favorite 4×6 prints. Using the Japanese Stab Binding method and a touch of elegance with the Noble binding pattern, we’ll create a keepsake you’ll cherish for years to come.

Part 1: Preparing the Paper

Understanding Photo Album Spines

Before we dive into cutting and pasting, let’s talk about spacers. When we add photos and mementos to our albums, the spine can weaken over time. Spacers add a bit of breathing room between pages, preventing strain and ensuring your album stands the test of time.

Steps:

  1. Cut and Deckle: Cut each sheet of paper to the specified dimensions. For a romantic, handcrafted feel, consider deckling the edges using a paper tear bar.

  2. Apply Spacers: Using double-sided tape, adhere spacers to all but one sheet of paper. This remaining sheet will serve as our template for the sewing stations.

  3. Score: Using a bone folder and ruler, score a line 1-1/2″ from the left edge of each sheet (this should be right after the spacer). This score line will help the pages turn smoothly.

Creating the Sewing Template:

Now, let’s prepare for the Japanese Stab Binding method using the Noble pattern. On your template sheet, mark the following sewing station locations:

  • 1B: 1/2″ up from the bottom edge, 1/2″ in from the spine edge
  • 1A: 1″ up from the bottom edge, 1″ in from the spine edge
  • 2: 2-1/4″ up from the bottom edge, 1″ in from the spine edge
  • 3: 2-1/4″ down from the top edge, 1″ in from the spine edge
  • 4A: 1″ down from the top edge, 1″ in from the spine edge
  • 4B: 1/2″ down from the top edge, 1/2″ in from the spine edge

Part 2: Crafting the Front & Back Covers

Back Cover Construction:

  1. Adhere Book Board: Place your covering material (B) face down. Apply PVA glue to the back of the largest book board (C) and center it on the covering material, leaving a 1/2″ border. Smooth out any air bubbles.

  2. Trim and Glue: Mark and carefully cut the four corners of the covering material. Glue the top and bottom flaps to the book board, smoothing with a bone folder. Repeat with the side flaps, ensuring neat corners.

  3. Press: Place the cover under a heavy weight, sandwiched between two sheets of waste paper, for 15-20 minutes.

  4. Attach Decorative Paper: Apply PVA glue to the back of one sheet of decorative paper and center it on the inside of the back cover, leaving a 1/8″ border. Press and let dry.

Front Cover Construction:

  1. Assemble Cover: Lay the small covering material (A) face up. Apply PVA glue to the right edge and align the front board covering material, overlapping by 1/8″.

  2. Attach Book Boards: Apply PVA glue to the smaller book board (A) and center it on the small covering material, leaving a border. Repeat this process with the larger book board (B), positioning it approximately 1/8″ to the right of the smaller board, ensuring both are level.

  3. Trim and Define Hinge: Trim any excess material, leaving a 1/2″ border around the boards. Gently define the hinge using a bone folder.

  4. Repeat Back Cover Steps: Repeat steps 4-13 from the back cover instructions to complete the front cover.

Piercing the Covers:

  1. Use Template: Align your sewing template with the front cover and secure it with clamps.

  2. Pierce: Using a heavy-duty awl, pierce through the marked sewing stations. Define each hole with a light-duty tapered awl.

  3. Repeat for Back Cover: Sandwich the covers together to resemble a finished book. Clamp the front cover to the back cover, using the front cover as a guide to pierce the back cover sewing stations.

  4. Optional: Add Eyelets: For an extra touch of durability and visual appeal, insert eyelets at each sewing station. You can choose to alternate colors for a playful touch!

Part 3: Binding with the Noble Pattern

Understanding the Noble Pattern

Binding Steps:

  1. Assemble the Book: Combine the back cover, paper stack, and front cover, ensuring all edges are flush. Secure with clamps.

  2. Thread the Needle: Thread your needle with a generous length of satin ribbon.

  3. Sewing the Pattern: Follow this sequence, referring to the sewing station diagram:

    • Station 2: From the back of the book, insert the needle into station 2.
    • Loop Around: Pull the ribbon through, leaving a 3″ tail at the back, and wrap it around the spine. Insert the needle back through station 2.
    • Station 3: Move to station 3 and repeat the looping process.
    • Station 4A: From the back, insert the needle into station 4A, loop around the top edge of the spine, and back through 4A. Repeat this loop two more times.
    • Station 4B: Move to station 4B and repeat the looping process three times.
    • Return to 4A and 3: Insert the needle through 4A from the back and then into station 3.
    • Back to Station 2: From the back, insert the needle into station 2.
    • Tie Off: Flip the book and tie off the two ribbon ends near station 2. Use an awl to tuck the knot neatly into the hole.
