There’s a certain charm to handcrafted items, wouldn’t you agree? The time invested, the personal touch, and the unique beauty of each piece make them truly special. Here at Robert Kline Art, we celebrate the joy of creating, and today, we’re diving into the world of macrame, specifically, the art of crafting your own macrame keychains.

These little beauties are not just trendy, they’re a testament to the fact that even the simplest of knots can create something extraordinary. Plus, they add a touch of bohemian flair to your everyday essentials!

Gathering Your Macrame Supplies

Before we embark on our knotting journey, let’s gather our tools. Don’t worry, you won’t need a whole craft store for this project! Here’s what you’ll need:

  • Macrame Cord: Cotton cord is a great choice for beginners. It’s soft, easy to work with, and comes in a variety of colors.
  • Scissors: A sharp pair for clean cuts.
  • Measuring Tape: While you can always eyeball it, a measuring tape helps in creating consistent knots and patterns.
  • Keychain Rings or Swivel Clasps: These are what you’ll attach your finished macrame piece to.
  • Optional Beads or Charms: For an extra touch of personality!

Mastering the Basic Macrame Knots

The beauty of macrame lies in its simplicity. With just a few basic knots, you can create an array of intricate designs. For our keychains, we’ll focus on two essential knots:

1. The Square Knot:

  • Cut four strands of cord, twice the desired length of your keychain.
  • Fold them in half and attach them to your keychain ring using a Lark’s Head Knot (which is as easy as it sounds – simply loop the folded end of your cords through the ring and pull the tails through the loop).
  • Now you have four working cords. For a square knot, treat the outermost cords as your “holding cords” and the two inner cords as your “knotting cords.”
  • Pass the left knotting cord over the holding cords, and then under the right knotting cord.
  • Bring the right knotting cord under the holding cords and then up through the loop created by the left knotting cord.
  • Pull both knotting cords tight to complete your first knot. Repeat these steps, alternating the starting side, to create a series of square knots.

2. The Spiral Knot:

  • The spiral knot is basically a variation of the square knot. Instead of alternating the starting knotting cord, you’ll consistently use the same side (either the left or right cord) as your leading knotting cord throughout the pattern.
  • This creates a beautiful, spiraled effect.

Creating Your Macrame Keychain

Now that you have the basics down, let’s craft our keychain:

  1. Measure and Cut: Decide on the desired length of your keychain. Remember to account for the folding and knotting. A good starting point is to cut strands that are at least four times the length of your intended keychain.
  2. Attach to Keychain Ring: Using a Lark’s Head Knot, attach your cords to your chosen keychain hardware.
  3. Start Knotting: Begin with a series of square knots to create the base of your keychain. You can experiment with the number of square knots to achieve the desired thickness.
  4. Get Creative with Spiral Knots: Once you’re happy with the base, introduce spiral knots to add a touch of visual interest. You can create a single spiral or multiple spirals in different directions.
  5. Add Beads and Charms (Optional): Thread beads onto your cords before tying off your knots for an extra pop of color and personality.
  6. Finishing Touches: Once you’ve achieved the desired length and design, trim any excess cord and carefully secure the ends. You can use a dab of clear nail polish or fabric glue to prevent fraying.

Tips and Tricks

  • Practice makes perfect! Don’t be discouraged if your first few knots aren’t perfect. Like any craft, it takes a little time to get the hang of it.
  • Vary your cord colors and textures.
  • Experiment with different beads and charms.
  • Look for inspiration online – there are countless macrame patterns and tutorials available.
