Handcrafted Leather Pen Roll: A Review of the Frara Road Pen Roll

Frara Road Leather pen roll review

As an artist, I’ve always had a soft spot for handcrafted goods. There’s just something about the combination of skilled craftsmanship and unique design that mass-produced items can’t replicate. So, when I had the opportunity to review a Frara Road leather pen roll, I jumped at the chance. Let’s just say, I wasn’t disappointed.

A Pen Roll That Prioritizes Protection

For a long time, I was skeptical about pen rolls. I had always preferred hard shell cases, like my trusty Visconti Dreamtouch, for the ultimate protection they offered my precious writing instruments. The idea of my pens potentially knocking against each other in a soft roll filled me with dread. However, the Frara Road pen roll challenged my preconceived notions.

Simple Design, Quality Craftsmanship

Crafted from beautiful, supple full-grain leather, the Frara Road pen roll exudes quality. The minimalist design features clean lines and edges folded for a polished look and added durability. While they use standard thread instead of the thicker waxed variety often seen in leatherwork, the stitching is neat and feels secure.

One of the things that immediately stood out to me was the softness of the leather. It’s thick enough to provide adequate protection without being bulky. The brown leather arrived with a slightly aged finish – minor scuffs and wrinkles that only added to its charm.

Functionality Meets Security

The pen roll is secured with a simple yet effective leather strap attached to one side. This tucks neatly behind the case when opened flat and threads through an oval hole to close. A textured patch on the back of the leather provides extra grip, ensuring the roll stays securely closed. While it took a little getting used to, I found the closure mechanism surprisingly reliable.

The roll comfortably houses six pens, with each slot snugly holding them in place, even larger pens like my Montblanc 149. I was impressed that even smaller pens didn’t slide down, a common issue with pen rolls. The tight slots also eliminate the need for pen clips, ensuring no accidental scratches occur. My inner pen-lover breathed a sigh of relief!

A Worthy Everyday Companion

After several months of daily use, I can confidently say the Frara Road pen roll has held up exceptionally well. The leather has developed a beautiful patina, with the initial scuffs blending seamlessly into the overall look. While I expected more oil absorption, it hasn’t become overly shiny, retaining its soft matte finish.

However, a minor drawback was the fibrous texture on the leather’s backside, which initially left small lint particles on my pens. Thankfully, this lessened significantly after a few weeks of use.

Final Thoughts

The Frara Road pen roll pleasantly surprised me. It’s stylish, well-crafted, and, most importantly, keeps my pens safe. While it may not offer the absolute fort-like protection of a hard shell case, it provides a good balance of security and style for everyday carry. At around 75 USD, it’s competitively priced and a worthy addition to any pen enthusiast’s collection.

If you’re looking for a handcrafted leather pen roll that combines minimalist design with quality construction, I highly recommend checking out Frara Road.
