Craftsy Class: The Art of Cloth Dyeing

Have you ever looked at a vibrant piece of tie-dyed clothing and thought, “I could never do that”? Well, I’m here to tell you that you absolutely can! With Father’s Day just around the corner, why not ditch the predictable tie and treat Dad (or yourself!) to an exciting and colorful experience – a virtual tie-dyeing workshop!

Unleashing Creativity with “The Art of Cloth Dyeing”

Like many of you, I was a self-proclaimed non-dyer until recently. I stumbled upon the fascinating world of fabric dyeing about two years ago, and it’s safe to say that I’m officially hooked!

My dyeing journey took a giant leap forward when I discovered Craftsy’s “The Art of Cloth Dyeing” class with the incredible Jane Dunnewold. As a seasoned dyer with a bookshelf full of dyeing books, I initially questioned if I needed another class. Boy, was I wrong! Jane’s class is a game-changer!

A Deep Dive into Dyeing Techniques

What sets Jane’s class apart is her ability to make the art of dyeing accessible and fun. Her teaching style is engaging and humorous, and her step-by-step guidance gives you the confidence to experiment.

The class covers everything from:

  • Fabric Selection and Preparation: Learn the best types of fabric for dyeing and how to prep them for optimal color absorption.
  • Dye Mixing and Color Theory: Discover the magic of color mixing, creating your own unique palette for truly personalized results.
  • Basic and Advanced Fabric Manipulation Techniques: From classic tie-dye folds to intricate Shibori designs, explore a range of techniques for creating stunning patterns.
  • Overdyeing for Depth and Dimension: Learn how to transform “happy accidents” into stunning works of art by layering colors and experimenting with overdyeing techniques.

My Overdyeing Adventures: From Drab to Fab!

Inspired by Jane’s expert guidance, I decided to try my hand at overdyeing. I had a previously dyed piece that I wasn’t quite happy with – an oatmeal resist project that felt a little lackluster.

Using Dharma Trading Company’s Orange Marmalade dye, I fan-folded the fabric and let the dye work its magic. The results? A complete transformation! The once-drab fabric was now vibrant and full of life.

Experimenting with Techniques and Colors

Emboldened by my success, I continued experimenting with different overdyeing techniques and color combinations.

Here are a few other projects I tackled:

  • Tulip-Dyed Fabric: This piece, originally dyed with Tulip dyes, completely transformed with a vibrant dose of Dharma Trading Company’s Orchard dye. By folding the fabric in half multiple times before dyeing, I achieved a unique and eye-catching pattern.
  • Sun-Printed Fabric: This experiment involved overdyeing a piece of sun-printed fabric with Dharma Trading Company’s Goldfinch dye. While the result wasn’t my favorite, it highlighted the importance of experimentation and trying new things in the world of dyeing.
  • Bubble Wrap Texture: For a fun, textured effect, I rolled white muslin fabric with bubble wrap and secured it with rubber bands before dyeing it with Dharma Trading Company’s Dragon Fruit. The result? A unique piece with a playful, bubbly pattern!
  • Shibori Magic: My final project involved using the traditional Japanese Shibori technique, wrapping white muslin fabric around a PVC pipe and securing it with rubber bands before dyeing it with Dharma Trading Company’s Parakeet. The outcome was a striking piece with a beautiful pattern.

The Joy of Learning and Sharing

One of the things I love most about Craftsy classes is the interactive element. Jane encourages students to ask questions, share their work, and learn from each other. It’s like having a personal dyeing mentor right at your fingertips!
