How to Transform Your Patio with DIY Painted Ceramic Planters

Spray Painting Ceramic Pots

Have you ever fallen in love with a set of outdoor cushions, only to realize your ceramic planters clash with the new vibe? Buying new planters can get pricey, but don’t worry, there’s a simple solution: spray painting! It’s a quick and affordable way to give your patio a fresh look in just an hour. Let me, Robert Kline, guide you through the process.

Gather Your Supplies

Before you begin, make sure you have everything you need:

  • Ceramic pots/planters: Give them a good cleaning to remove any dirt or debris and let them dry completely.
  • Spray paint: Choose a color that complements your outdoor space. I love using Rust-Oleum Painter’s Touch Multi Purpose Spray Paint – it’s a paint and primer in one, offering a smooth, durable finish. For my red, white, and blue coastal theme, I opted for a gloss finish in candy apple red and navy blue.
  • Drop cloth: Protect your work surface from paint splatters.
  • Gloves: (Optional) Keep your hands clean.

Spray Painting Tips from Robert Kline

Here are a few tips from my years of experience:

  • Cloudy day is best: Avoid painting in direct sunlight, as it can cause the paint to bubble and peel.
  • Light coats are key: Hold the can about 12 inches away from the planter and apply several light coats, allowing a few minutes of drying time between each. Don’t forget to spray the inside rim of the pot as well.

The Transformation

Let’s illustrate with a recent project of mine. I had a green planter that looked dated. After cleaning it thoroughly, I gave it a couple of coats of vibrant red spray paint. The difference is astounding! Even a planter filled with spray styrofoam filler (leftover from a DIY project) transformed into a stylish accent.
