The BEST All-Natural Homemade Lotion Recipe for Healthy, Radiant Skin

Have you ever stopped to think about what you’re putting on your skin? It’s your body’s largest organ and deserves the same care and attention as what you put in your body. That’s why I’m so excited to share my journey to creating the BEST all-natural homemade lotion – a recipe born from necessity and a passion for nourishing my skin from the outside in.

My Story: From Scented Lotions to Natural Skincare

Like many, I used to choose lotions based solely on their fragrance. I never stopped to consider the long list of ingredients, some of which I couldn’t even pronounce, that I was slathering onto my skin. It wasn’t until I started experiencing persistent psoriasis that I began to question my skincare choices.

The more I researched, the more I realized the potential harm of conventional lotions laden with chemicals. My “aha” moment came when I read that our skin absorbs whatever we put on it. It was time to take control of my skin’s health.

The Journey to Creating The BEST All-Natural Homemade Lotion

My journey into the world of DIY skincare began with online research and a few Pinterest recipes. While some attempts were okay, many left my skin greasy, sticky, or didn’t quite meet my all-natural standards.

Determined to find the perfect formula, I started experimenting with different natural ingredients, learning about their unique properties and benefits. After much trial and error, I finally cracked the code and crafted a lotion that exceeded my expectations – a lotion that’s not only incredibly nourishing but also feels amazing on the skin.

Ingredients:

  • 1/2 cup Coconut Oil: Choose 100% pure, unrefined, cold-pressed coconut oil for its moisturizing and antibacterial properties.
  • 2 teaspoons Beeswax Pellets: 100% pure beeswax acts as a natural emulsifier, helping to bind the ingredients and create a smooth texture.
  • 1 cup Shea Butter: Opt for 100% pure, organic, unrefined shea butter, renowned for its deeply moisturizing and healing properties.
  • 1/2 cup Sweet Almond Oil: This lightweight oil absorbs quickly, leaving skin soft and supple.
  • 1/4 cup Aloe Vera Gel: Choose 100% pure aloe vera gel (not juice) for its soothing and anti-inflammatory benefits. Important: Ensure your aloe vera gel does NOT contain Triethanolamine, a potentially harmful ingredient.
  • 15 drops Red Raspberry Seed Oil: This oil is rich in antioxidants and essential fatty acids that promote healthy skin.
  • 15 drops Carrot Seed Oil: Known for its skin-regenerating properties, carrot seed oil can help improve skin tone and texture.
  • 48 drops Essential Oils (your choice): Now for the fun part! Choose your favorite essential oils to create a personalized scent that uplifts your senses.

Equipment:

  • Double Boiler (or a regular pan and stainless steel bowl)
  • Hand Mixer
  • Glass Storage Jars (8oz size recommended)
  • Pipettes (optional, for measuring essential oils)
  • Wooden Tags and Yarn (optional, for labeling and gifting)

Instructions:

  1. Create a Double Boiler Setup: Fill a saucepan with about an inch of water and place a heatproof bowl on top, ensuring the bottom of the bowl doesn’t touch the water.

  2. Melt the Base: Combine the coconut oil and beeswax pellets in the bowl and melt over medium heat. Once the beeswax is fully melted, add the shea butter, stirring until smooth.

  3. Cool Slightly: Remove the bowl from the heat and allow the mixture to cool in the fridge for 20 minutes.

  4. Mix the Liquid Ingredients: In a separate bowl, combine the almond oil, aloe vera gel, red raspberry seed oil, carrot seed oil, and your chosen essential oils.

  5. Combine and Freeze: Gradually incorporate the aloe/oil mixture into the cooled coconut oil/shea butter/beeswax mixture, stirring well. Place the mixture in the freezer for 15-20 minutes, or until it begins to solidify slightly around the edges.

  6. First Whip: Remove from the freezer and use a hand mixer on low speed for 30-45 seconds to create a smooth consistency. Freeze again for 5 minutes.

  7. Final Whip: After the final freeze, whip the mixture again on low speed (1-2) for 1-1.5 minutes. The longer you whip, the fluffier the lotion will become. Aim for a consistency similar to honey.

  8. Jar Up and Enjoy!: Pour the lotion into your glass storage jars and let it sit at room temperature to finish setting.

  • Storage: Store your lotion in a cool, dark place to preserve its freshness. It should last for several months.
