Hey there, fellow craft enthusiasts! Remember those groovy macrame plant hangers from the 70s? Well, they’re back and more stylish than ever! As an avid crafter here at Robert Kline Art, I’m always excited to explore trends that combine nostalgia with modern flair. This DIY macrame plant hanger does just that, adding a touch of boho chic to your home while letting your green thumb shine.

What Exactly is Macrame?

For those unfamiliar, macrame is a crafting technique that involves knotting cords or strings to create various patterns and designs. It’s surprisingly simple, even for beginners! You don’t need any fancy tools, just some cord, a mounting ring, and a dash of creativity. I like to add wooden beads to mine for a nostalgic touch, but feel free to personalize yours with different materials.

Creating Your Own Macrame Plant Hanger

This project is perfect for a lazy afternoon or a weekend project. Here’s what you’ll need:

Materials:

  • Cotton cord (or jute, twine, yarn, clothesline, or hemp)
  • Wooden or metal ring
  • Wooden beads (optional)
  • Scissors
  • Measuring tape
  • Rod or hanger for the mounting ring

Instructions:

  1. Measure and Cut: Measure the height of your plant pot and multiply by 16 to determine the length of each cord. Cut eight cords to this length.
  2. Attach to the Ring: Fold each cord in half and attach it to the mounting ring using a lark’s head knot.
  3. Gathering Knot: Tie all cords together using a gathering knot or a simple knot.
  4. Spiral Knots: Grab four strands and start making spiral knots (also known as half square knots). Create 24 spiral knots.
  5. Switch and Repeat: Swap the outer cords with the center cords. Leave 2 inches of unknotted cord and make 12 more spiral knots. Add beads and a full square knot if desired. Continue with 18 more spiral knots. Repeat for all four cord sets.
  6. Joining the Cords: Measure your pot to determine where to join the cords. Join adjacent cords using full square knots.
  7. Final Touches: Make a final gathering knot to join all cords at the bottom. Trim the ends to create fringe.

Tips From Your Resident Macrame Enthusiast

  • Measuring is Key: Overestimate your cord length! It’s better to have extra than to run out mid-project.
  • Practice Makes Perfect: Don’t be afraid to experiment with different knots and patterns.
  • Personalize It: Get creative with beads, colors, and different types of cord.
