DIY Fold-Out Ironing Board: The Space-Saving Solution for Every Home

As a craft enthusiast, I’m always looking for innovative ways to save space and maximize efficiency, especially when it comes to household chores. One DIY project that I absolutely swear by is a wall-mounted fold-out ironing board. It’s convenient, stylish, and incredibly practical for homes of all sizes.

Why Choose a Wall-Mounted Fold-Out Ironing Board?

Let’s face it, traditional ironing boards can be bulky and cumbersome. They take up precious floor space and are often a hassle to set up and put away. A wall-mounted fold-out ironing board eliminates these problems, offering a sleek and practical solution that seamlessly integrates into your home décor.

I remember when I first started crafting, my workspace was constantly cluttered with tools and materials. It was then that I realized the importance of utilizing vertical space. This realization sparked my fascination with wall-mounted solutions, and the fold-out ironing board was a game-changer!

Now, you might be thinking, “Building an ironing board sounds complicated!” But trust me, it’s much simpler than it looks, even if you’re not a seasoned DIYer. I’ll guide you through the process:

Materials:

  • An inexpensive ironing board (you’ll mainly be using the cover and padding)
  • 1″x12″ lumber for the ironing board base and the mounting plate
  • 2″x4″ lumber for the wall mount
  • 1″x4″ and 1″x2″ lumber for additional support and runners
  • One large fence hinge
  • One long bolt and nut for the swivel mechanism
  • Two large square washers
  • Five 1-1/2″ lag bolts for securing the hinge to the wall
  • Two 1″ bolts and nuts for connecting the hinge to the mounting plate
  • Five 3-1/2″ lag screws for mounting the wall support to the wall studs

Tools:

  • Saw (circular saw or jigsaw)
  • Drill
  • Wrench
  • Screwdriver
  • Level
  • Measuring tape
  • Pencil

Instructions:

  1. Prepare the Ironing Board: Remove the cover and padding from the inexpensive ironing board. Discard the metal frame.

  2. Create the Base: Cut the 1″x12″ lumber to the desired size for your ironing board base. Round the corners for a finished look.

  3. Mount the Wall Support: Attach the 2″x4″ wall mount to the wall, ensuring it is securely fastened to at least one wall stud.

  4. Attach the Hinge: Secure the fence hinge to the wall support using the 1-1/2″ lag bolts.

  5. Create the Mounting Plate: Cut the 1″x12″ lumber to create a square or rectangular mounting plate for the ironing board. Attach this plate to the hinge using the 1″ bolts and nuts.

  6. Add Support and Stability: Use the 1″x4″ lumber to add support between the mounting plate and the wall, if needed. Attach the 1″x2″ runners to the sides of the mounting plate to keep the ironing board level when folded out.

  7. Attach the Ironing Board: Secure the ironing board base to the mounting plate using screws, ensuring it is centered and level.

  8. Install the Swivel Mechanism: Drill a hole through the mounting plate and insert the long bolt and nut to create the swivel mechanism. Secure the nut with clear glue to prevent loosening.

  9. Add Rubber Feet: Attach the rubber feet to the bottom of the ironing board base to provide stability and prevent scratching.

  10. Finishing Touches: Sand down any rough edges and apply paint or stain to match your décor.
