Tools:

Post hole digger
Tape measure
Nail gun
Saw for cutting posts
Level
Hammer
Extension cord

Materials:

20 pieces of 1″ x 3″ pine boards at 12ft long (for the slats)
3-4 pressure treated 4″ x 4″ posts at 8ft long
1.5″ nails
1.5″ spacers
Small bag of fine gravel
Exterior wood stain (I used Sherwin-Williams Super Deck in Semi-Transparent Baja Beige)
Plastic drop cloth
2″ angled brush for water-based stain
Latex gloves

Building Your Privacy Screen: A Step-by-Step Guide

With our tools and materials prepped, let’s dive into the construction process:

Phase 1: Assembling the Screen

Find a flat surface: Choose a flat, level surface to work on. This will make assembling the screen much easier.
Cut the posts: Cut your 4″ x 4″ posts to a height of 84″. This will leave you with about a 10-12″ footing for securing the screen into the ground.
Lay out the posts: Place your three posts on the ground where the screen will stand. The posts should be spaced evenly, with one in the middle and one on each end.
Attach the slats: Starting at the top, begin attaching your 1″ x 3″ pine slats horizontally to the posts using the nail gun. Be sure to use your level frequently to ensure each slat is straight and the screen remains level throughout the process.
Maintain consistent spacing: Use your 1.5″ spacers between each slat to guarantee uniform spacing.
Complete the screen: Continue attaching the slats until you reach the bottom. Remember to keep that 10-12″ footing free at the base of the posts.
Mark the post holes: Carefully measure the distances between your posts and mark the location of the post holes on the ground.
Check for underground utilities: Before you start digging, contact your local utility companies to ensure there are no underground lines in the way.
Dig the post holes: Using the post hole digger, dig three holes about 7″ deep – one for each post.
Prepare the holes: Pour about 1″ of fine gravel into the bottom of each hole and tamp it down to create a level base.
Set the screen in place: Carefully lift the assembled privacy screen and position each post into its designated hole. Use your level to make sure the screen is perfectly upright.
Secure the posts: Pack the soil firmly around the base of each post to stabilize the screen. You can also choose to set the posts in concrete for added stability.
Attach to the patio (optional): If you have an existing patio, consider attaching the privacy screen to the edge for extra support.

Allow ample drying time: Let the stain dry completely overnight before enjoying your new privacy screen. Be sure to check the weather forecast and avoid staining if rain is expected.
