Craft Your Own Cozy Outdoor Cushions

Remember that inviting outdoor space at the Robert Kline Art studio? We added comfy bench seating a while back, but it wasn’t truly complete until we added plush outdoor cushions. Trust me, outdoor cushions make any space feel complete, adding a touch of luxury and comfort. The best part? You can easily craft your own! If you’re looking to revamp your outdoor area, this DIY project is for you. And while you’re at it, why not complement your new cushions with other DIY outdoor projects like a fire pit, a mid-century pergola, or some stylish outdoor furniture? Let’s get crafting!

Gathering Your Supplies

Before we start, let’s gather everything we need. For this project, you’ll need:

Materials:

  • Canvas twill or outdoor fabric (choose a fabric that’s durable and weather-resistant)
  • Outdoor cushion filling (the amount will depend on the size of your cushions)
  • Zipper (make sure it’s the width of your cushion)

Equipment:

  • Standard sewing machine
  • Fabric scissors
  • Sewing pins
  • Waterproofing spray (optional but recommended for added protection)

Measuring and Cutting Your Fabric

1. Determining Cushion Dimensions

First things first, measure the width and depth of the seating area you’ll be creating cushions for. This will determine the size of your cushions. The height of your cushion will depend on the thickness of the cushion filling you choose.

Expert Tip: “For a plush and comfortable feel, I recommend using cushion filling that’s at least 4 inches thick,” says Sarah Thompson, an experienced seamstress specializing in home décor.

2. Calculating Fabric Dimensions

  • For the top and bottom panels of the cushion: Add 1 inch to both the width and depth measurements you took for seam allowance.
  • For the side panel:
    • Add the original width and depth measurements of one panel (without the seam allowance) together.
    • Multiply that number by 2 (since there are two sides).
    • Add 1 inch to that total for seam allowance.
    • The height of this long side panel will be the height of your cushion filling plus 1 inch for seam allowance.

3. Cutting Your Fabric

Using your trusty fabric scissors, carefully cut out the top and bottom panels, as well as the long side panel, according to your measurements. Don’t forget to round the edges of your top and bottom panels for a softer look.

Sewing Your Cushion Cover

1. Creating the Side Panel Loop

Fold the long side panel in half lengthwise, with the right sides of the fabric facing each other. Pin and sew along the long edge with a 1/2 inch seam allowance to create a continuous loop.

2. Attaching the Side Panel to the Top Panel

With the right sides together, carefully line up the raw edge of the side panel loop with the edge of the top panel. Pin them together securely. To make sewing around the corners easier, snip small “V” shaped notches into the fabric at each corner. Sew all the way around the edges with a 1/2 inch seam allowance.

3. Adding the Zipper to the Bottom Panel

Before attaching the bottom panel, we need to install the zipper.

  • Lay the bottom panel right side up. Place the zipper face down along one edge of the fabric, aligning it 1/2 inch from the edge. Pin it in place.
  • Using a zipper foot on your sewing machine, sew the zipper in place along that side.
  • Flip the zipper over and repeat the pinning and sewing process on the other side to secure the zipper to the fabric.

4. Attaching the Bottom Panel

Pin the bottom panel to the side panel, just like you did with the top panel. Remember to clip those helpful “V” notches at the corners. Starting at one end of the zipper, sew around the bottom panel with a 1/2-inch seam allowance, stopping when you reach the other end of the zipper. Important: Make sure to leave the zipper open a few inches so you can insert your cushion filling later.

5. Turning Your Cushion Cover Right Side Out

Once you’ve sewn all the way around, give yourself a pat on the back – you’re almost there! Carefully turn your cushion cover right side out through the open zipper.

Inserting the Cushion Filling

1. Measuring and Cutting the Cushion Filling

Measure the inside dimensions of your cushion cover. Using a ruler and a marker, mark these dimensions on your cushion filling. You can use a handsaw or electric carving knife to cut the filling.

Expert Tip: “For a plumper cushion, I recommend cutting the cushion filling slightly larger than the actual cover dimensions—about an inch extra in width and length,” advises John Davis, a furniture designer known for his comfortable and stylish creations.

2. Inserting the Filling

Fold your cut cushion filling in half like a taco shell and carefully insert it into the cushion cover through the open zipper. Once it’s snugly inside, zip the cover closed.

Finishing Touches

For added protection against the elements, apply a waterproofing spray to your finished cushion cover. Allow it to dry completely before using.
