DIY Bamboo Privacy Screen: Transform Your Outdoor Space

Looking for a unique and budget-friendly way to add privacy to your outdoor space? Look no further than a DIY bamboo privacy screen! I recently tackled this project for my own backyard makeover, and the results were even better than I could have imagined. This guide will walk you through each step, making it easy to create your own stylish and functional privacy screen.

Why Choose a DIY Bamboo Privacy Screen?

While searching for privacy screen ideas, I found myself drawn to the natural beauty and affordability of bamboo. Traditional lattice felt too common and the cost was more than I wanted to spend. I wanted something unique that wouldn’t break the bank, and bamboo turned out to be the perfect solution!

Gathering Your Materials

Here’s what you’ll need to get started:

  • Thin wood strips: These will form the frame of your screen. Have them cut to your desired length at your local hardware store.
  • Exterior wood stain: Choose a stain that complements your outdoor space.
  • Bamboo fencing: The star of the show! I used a 6-foot tall fence and cut it in half to create 3-foot panels.
  • Small L Brackets: For securing the frame to your existing structure.
  • Cup Hooks: Used to attach the bamboo fencing to the wood frame.

Building Your DIY Bamboo Privacy Screen

I was short on time (hosting a party!), so I didn’t take step-by-step photos. But, these simple illustrations will guide you:

  • Step 1: Stain and let the wood strips dry completely.
  • Step 2: Attach the two outer wood strips to your existing structure (fence, deck railing, etc.).
  • Step 3: Secure the bottom of the outer strips with L brackets.
  • Step 4: Install cup hooks on the top and bottom of the outer strips.
  • Step 5: Hang the bamboo fencing onto the cup hooks.
  • Step 6: Attach the two remaining wood strips to enclose the bamboo fencing, securing them with L brackets.

Tips from Robert Kline Art

  • Pre-drilling pilot holes for your screws will prevent the wood from splitting.
  • Consider the height of your privacy screen. I cut my bamboo fencing in half, but you can adjust the height to fit your needs.
  • Be creative! This design is easily customizable. Try different wood stains or experiment with the placement of the bamboo.
