DIY Hanging Spice Rack: Taming the Spice Jar Chaos with Robert Kline Art

Let’s be honest, we’ve all been there – staring into the abyss of a messy spice cabinet or drawer, completely overwhelmed. Finding the right spice becomes an archaeological dig! But fear not, fellow organization enthusiasts, for I have a solution that’s both practical and stylish: a DIY hanging spice rack.

As an advocate for handcrafted beauty and a firm believer in conquering clutter, I recently embarked on this project to finally bring order to my own spice collection. I was tired of the makeshift box on top of the fridge! This DIY project is perfect for anyone wanting to add a touch of rustic charm and organization to their kitchen.

Gathering Your Supplies

Before we dive into the construction, let’s gather our tools and materials. I always find that having everything prepped and ready to go makes the crafting process so much smoother.

Materials:

  • (1) 1×3 wood board at 6ft
  • (1) 1×4 wood board at 6ft
  • (2) 1/2” x 3” wood boards at 3ft
  • (2) 1/2” x 2” wood boards at 3ft
  • 1” and 1 1/4” Kreg screws
  • 1 1/4” Brad nails
  • Wood glue (I recommend using a high-quality wood glue for a strong bond)
  • Paint or stain of your choice (I opted for a classic white for a clean look)

Tools:

  • Kreg Jig (a lifesaver for creating strong and discreet joints)
  • Drill
  • Miter saw (for those clean, angled cuts)
  • Clamps
  • Brad nailer

Spice Jars:

  • I found some charming glass jars with shaker lids online, but feel free to use what you have on hand or get creative with repurposed containers!

1. Measure Twice, Cut Once: Prepping the Wood

Using your trusty miter saw, make the following cuts:

  • (4) 1×3 boards at 13” (these will become the sides of our shelves)
  • (4) 1/2” x 3” boards at 13” (the back supports for the shelves)
  • (4) 1/2” x 2” boards at 13” (the front supports for the shelves)
  • (2) 1×4 boards at 22 3/4” (the vertical supports for the entire rack)
  • (1) 1×4 board at 13” (the top piece of the rack)

Remember, accurate cutting is key for a sturdy and well-fitting spice rack!

2. Pocket Hole Power: Joining the Shelves

For this project, we’ll be utilizing the magic of pocket holes. If you’re not familiar with pocket hole joinery, don’t worry! It’s a simple yet incredibly strong method for joining wood pieces, and it hides the screws for a polished finish.

Using your Kreg Jig, drill pocket holes into the (4) 1/2” x 3” boards and the (1) 1×4 board at 13”. Be sure to adjust your Kreg Jig settings based on the wood thickness you’re working with.

Pro Tip: Secure your workpieces with clamps before drilling to prevent any movement and ensure accurate pocket hole placement.

3. Assembling the Shelves: Building the Spice Rack’s Foundation

Now it’s time to assemble the individual shelves:

  1. Apply wood glue to one edge of a 1×3 board (one of the 13″ pieces) and attach a 1/2” x 3” board to it using your brad nailer and 1 1/4” brad nails. Ensure the pocket holes you drilled earlier are facing upwards.
  2. Carefully flip the joined pieces over and attach a 1/2” x 2” board to the front edge of the 1×3 board, again using wood glue and brad nails.

Repeat these steps for the remaining three shelves. Congratulations, you’ve just built the foundation of your spice rack!

4. Framing the Shelves: Bringing It All Together

With our four shelves prepped, we’ll now create the frame that holds everything together:

  1. Lay the two 22 3/4″ 1×4 boards flat on your work surface.
  2. Position the four shelves along the 1×4 boards, ensuring they are evenly spaced at 5.5″ apart.
  3. Using a pencil, mark on the 1×4 boards where each shelf will be attached.
  4. Secure the shelves to the frame using your 1″ Kreg screws and drill.

5. Final Touches: Sanding, Finishing, and Hanging

You’re almost there! The basic structure of your DIY spice rack is complete. Now, let’s add those finishing touches:

  1. Fill any visible nail holes with wood filler and allow it to dry completely.
  2. Lightly sand any rough edges for a polished look.
  3. Now for the fun part – painting or staining! I opted for a crisp white paint that complements any kitchen décor.

Once the paint or stain has dried, carefully mount your DIY spice rack to the wall using appropriate hardware. Make sure to locate studs for maximum support!

Styling Your Spice Rack: Let Your Personality Shine!

Now comes the really enjoyable part – filling your beautiful new spice rack! Transfer your spices into matching jars (or get creative with repurposed containers), label them clearly, and arrange them in a way that sparks joy every time you cook.

This DIY project is not only a practical solution for organizing your spices but also a wonderful opportunity to showcase your personal style. Don’t hesitate to experiment with different finishes, embellishments, or even adding small hooks to hang utensils.
