DIY Hanging Magazine Rack: Organize Your Bathroom With Style

Tired of magazine clutter in your bathroom? I hear you! While I’m not a fan of reading material in the bathroom myself, I understand the need for a practical and stylish storage solution. That’s why I decided to create a DIY hanging magazine rack using leftover wood from previous projects. This project was quick, affordable, and transformed a blank wall into a functional and organized space. Let me show you how you can create your own!

Gathering Your Materials

Before we begin, let’s gather the necessary materials. You’ll need:

  • Leftover Wood: I used pine and birch, but any sturdy wood will do.
  • Measuring Tape: For accurate cuts and placement.
  • Level: Essential for ensuring your rack is straight.
  • Pencil: To mark your measurements and cutting lines.
  • Saw: To cut your wood to the desired size.
  • Nail Gun: For secure attachment to the wall. (You can also use a hammer and nails, but a nail gun makes the process much faster.)
  • 2-inch Nails: For attaching the wood pieces.
  • Wood Putty: To fill nail holes for a polished finish.
  • Caulk: To seal any gaps between the wood and the wall.
  • Primer: To prepare the wood for painting.
  • Paint: Choose a color that complements your bathroom decor.
  • Paintbrush: For applying primer and paint.

Building Your DIY Hanging Magazine Rack

Now let’s get to the fun part – building the magazine rack!

Step 1: Measure and Cut

  • Measure the Height: Determine how high you want your rack to be on the wall.
  • Mark the Wall: Using a level, mark the desired location for your rack on the wall.
  • Cut the Side Pieces: Cut two pieces of your 1×2 wood to the measured height for the sides of the rack.

Step 2: Attach the Sides

  • Align and Secure: Align the cut side pieces with your marked lines on the wall, ensuring they are level.
  • Nail in Place: Use your nail gun (or hammer and nails) to securely attach the side pieces to the wall. Be sure to nail into wall studs for maximum stability.

Step 3: Add the Bottom and Support Pieces

  • Measure the Width: Measure the desired width of your magazine rack.
  • Cut the Bottom Piece: Cut a piece of 1×3 wood to the measured width. This will be the bottom of your rack.
  • Attach the Bottom Piece: Align the bottom piece with the lower edges of the side pieces and nail it in place.
  • Cut and Attach the Support Piece: Cut another piece of 1×3 wood slightly shorter than the width to act as a support piece to prevent magazines from sliding out. Position this piece a few inches above the bottom piece and nail it in place.

Step 4: Create the Top Shelf

  • Measure and Cut the Top Shelf: Measure the width for your top shelf, making sure it aligns with the sides and extends slightly beyond the support piece for a finished look.
  • Attach the Top Shelf: Align the top shelf with the upper edges of the side pieces and nail it securely.

Step 5: Finishing Touches

  • Fill Nail Holes: Apply wood putty to all nail holes and allow it to dry completely.
  • Caulk Seams: Apply a thin bead of caulk along any seams or gaps between the wood and the wall for a clean and finished appearance.
  • Prime and Paint: Apply a coat of primer to the entire rack and allow it to dry. Then, paint your desired color. (I chose a bright white to match the trim in my bathroom.)
