As an artist, my studio is my sanctuary. But, as anyone with a passion for creating knows, space is always at a premium! When we realized our home office had morphed into an overflow storage room, I knew it was time for a change. We yearned for a space that could welcome visiting family and friends, while still serving as a creative hub. The solution? A DIY Murphy bed with built-in storage – a project that would allow us to have the best of both worlds!
Planning and Preparation: Gathering Your Supplies
Before diving into this exciting endeavor, proper planning is key. Here’s a breakdown of the essential tools and materials you’ll need:

With our tools and materials assembled, it was time to bring our vision to life! We carefully followed the detailed instructions provided with our Murphy bed kit.

We began by cutting the sides of the Murphy bed cabinet, ensuring they were smooth and free of any imperfections. Sanding these pieces before assembly is crucial for achieving a professional-looking finish.

Using pocket holes and screws, we joined the cabinet sides with a sturdy top piece, carefully measuring and leveling as we went.
Step 3: Integrating the Gas Springs
To ensure effortless opening and closing of the Murphy bed, we installed gas springs, connecting them securely between the inside of the cabinet and the bed frame. This step is essential for smooth and safe operation.
Adding Storage and Style: Built-in Cabinets and Shelving
No Murphy bed is complete without stylish and functional storage! We opted for built-in cabinets and shelves on either side, creating a seamless and polished look.
Step 1: Building the Cabinet Bases
Sturdy 2x4s formed the bases for our side cabinets. We then constructed the cabinet boxes using 3/4-inch pine, using pocket holes and screws for a secure and seamless connection.
Step 2: Installing the Cabinets
With the cabinet boxes complete, we attached them to their bases and securely fastened them to the wall. To maximize storage space, we added a shelf to each cabinet.
Step 3: Creating Upper Shelving
For additional storage and visual appeal, we installed upper shelving above the cabinets, opting for a depth of 10 inches to allow them to be recessed behind the bed when not in use.
Pro Tip: To conceal unfinished edges and add a touch of elegance, consider using 1×2 trim pieces around your shelves.
Adding Finishing Touches: Faux Cabinets and Paint
To truly elevate the look of our Murphy bed, we incorporated faux cabinet doors on the bed frame itself. This clever design element seamlessly blends the bed into the surrounding built-in units, creating the illusion of a complete wall of cabinetry.
Step 1: Crafting the Faux Cabinet Doors
Using 1x3s, we constructed the frames for our faux cabinet doors. To complete the illusion, we added cabinet hardware for an authentic touch.
Step 2: Building Real Cabinet Doors
For the side cabinets, we created real cabinet doors using a similar process. We used wood glue and pocket screws to build the door frames, then routed out recesses for the 1/4-inch plywood panels that would form the center of each door.
Step 3: Sanding and Painting
Once all the doors were assembled, we meticulously sanded each one with progressively finer grits of sandpaper, ensuring a perfectly smooth surface for painting.
After carefully caulking and filling all nail holes, we primed the cabinets, shelves, and the inside of the Murphy bed cabinet. We then applied two coats of Behr’s Cabinet, Door & Trim Enamel paint for a durable and flawless finish.
