DIY Outdoor Shower with Solar Water Heater: An Eco-Friendly Luxury

Here at Robert Kline Art, we believe in the transformative power of nature and the satisfaction of creating something with your own two hands. Today, we’re diving into a project that embodies both: building your very own outdoor shower with a solar water heater. Imagine stepping out of your back door and into a refreshing shower under the open sky, all while minimizing your environmental impact. Sounds pretty amazing, right?

This project is inspired by the ingenious creation of Francois Cramer, a fellow DIY enthusiast living off-grid in Portugal. His blog post about his solar shower journey sparked a fire in our creative souls, and we’re excited to share a reimagined version with you. Whether you’re a seasoned DIYer or just starting out, this project is an opportunity to flex your creative muscles and embrace a sustainable lifestyle.

Gathering Your Materials: A Symphony of Recycled and New

Before we embark on this exciting journey, let’s gather our tools and materials. This project beautifully demonstrates how we can repurpose everyday items and combine them with new materials for an eco-conscious approach.

Here’s what you’ll need:

Water Tank:

  • 1m3 IBC Tank: These are readily available new or used. Look for one previously used for food storage. Ensure it’s thoroughly cleaned or be prepared for a good scrubbing!
  • Black plastic tarp: If your tank isn’t opaque or black, cover it to prevent algae growth.

Plumbing:

  • Black polyethylene (poly) piping: 3.2cm diameter, 100m long (can be adjusted for desired capacity)
  • High-pressure stainless steel pipes: Two short lengths to connect poly pipes to the mixer
  • Various plumbing connectors and fittings: Consult your local hardware store for the specific types and sizes needed.

Shower Structure:

  • Wooden planks: For the spiral base (240cm x 6cm x 8cm or smaller), shower head support, and shelves.
  • Galvanized steel hanger strap: To secure the pipe spiral to the wooden base.
  • Shower mixer and shower head: Standard types from any hardware store.
  • Pallet: For the shower cabin base.
  • Bamboo screen: For privacy and a touch of natural beauty.
  • Four sturdy trunks or posts: To support the bamboo screen.
  • Metal wire: To attach the bamboo screen to the posts.
  • Mirror (optional): For added convenience.

Remember: Always double-check measurements and quantities to suit your specific needs and space.

Building Your Solar Oasis: A Step-by-Step Guide

1. Creating the Heart of the System: The Solar Water Heater

  • Building the Spiral Base: Assemble two wooden planks in a cross shape using a halved joint. 240cm is ideal but you can adjust the length to suit your space.
  • Coiling the Pipe: Carefully coil the black polyethylene pipe around the wooden base, securing each loop with galvanized steel hanger straps. This step is easier with an extra pair of hands!

2. Connecting the Dots: From Tank to Shower Head

  • Tank Preparation: Drill a hole in the IBC tank cap and insert a plumbing connector to attach the piping.
  • Connecting the Pipes: Run the pipe from the tank to the spiral, then to the shower mixer using high-pressure stainless steel pipes for the final connection. Install a tap on the cold water line for added functionality.

3. Building Your Outdoor Haven: The Shower Enclosure

  • Constructing the Base: Use a sturdy pallet as the foundation for your shower enclosure.
  • Adding Support and Privacy: Secure the bamboo screen to four sturdy posts or trunks and attach them to the pallet. This creates a private and aesthetically pleasing enclosure.

4. Adding Finishing Touches: Making it Your Own

  • Installing the Shower Head: Attach the shower mixer and shower head to a wooden plank and secure it to the pallet. You can add a bar to adjust the shower head height.
  • Personalizing Your Space: Get creative! Add shelves, hooks, a mirror, or any other elements that enhance your outdoor shower experience.
