Tired of messy kitchen drawers that make finding the right utensil feel like a treasure hunt? I hear you! As an avid crafter and firm believer in functional beauty, I’ve found that a well-organized kitchen drawer can spark joy even in the midst of cooking chaos. That’s why I’m excited to share my simple yet effective guide to constructing a basic kitchen utensil drawer insert – a game-changer that’s easier than you might think!
Why You Need This DIY Drawer Organizer
Let’s face it, pre-made drawer organizers often miss the mark. They’re either too small, have the compartments in the wrong spots, or simply don’t fit your drawer’s unique dimensions. And custom-built organizers? While gorgeous, they can be quite pricey and time-consuming to order.
This DIY solution is:
- Budget-friendly: For under $10, you can transform that chaotic drawer into an organized haven.
- Customizable: Tailor the size, shape, and placement of compartments to perfectly match your utensils and drawer size.
- Easy to Make: If I can do it, you can too! No advanced DIY skills are required, I promise.
Gathering Your Materials
You only need a few basic materials for this project:
- 1/4″ thick craft or hobby board: I used Poplar, but you can choose any wood type that suits your style and budget.
- Loctite Clear Power Grab Heavy Duty adhesive: This adhesive dries clear and creates a strong bond.
- Measuring tape
- Pencil
- Saw: A skill saw works great, but you can also have the wood cut to size at your local hardware store.
- Jenga blocks (optional): These are surprisingly helpful for visualizing your divider placement!
Creating Your Custom Drawer Insert
Step 1: Plan and Measure
- Empty your drawer completely and sort your utensils by type (spatulas, whisks, spoons, etc.).
- Place the utensils back into the drawer in the arrangement you like best, using Jenga blocks (or any other suitable objects) to create temporary dividers and visualize your layout.
- Once you’re happy with the arrangement, measure the width and length you’ll need for each divider piece.
Step 2: Cut the Wood
- Using your measurements, carefully cut the craft board into the required sizes for your dividers.
Step 3: Dry Fit and Adjust
- Before gluing, place the cut wood pieces back into the drawer to ensure they fit snugly and create the desired compartments.
Step 4: Glue and Assemble
- Line your drawer with newspaper to protect it from any glue drips.
- Apply the Loctite adhesive to the edges of the wood pieces where they will connect to form the dividers.
- Carefully place the dividers back into the drawer, using the drawer itself as a guide to hold everything in place while the glue dries. Remember, we’re not gluing the dividers to the drawer itself, just to each other.
Step 5: Let it Dry and Enjoy!
- Allow the glue to dry completely according to the manufacturer’s instructions.
- Once dry, remove the drawer insert, discard the newspaper, and admire your handiwork!
Tips for Success
- Full Extension Drawer Slides: If your drawer doesn’t already have them, consider installing full extension drawer slides. This will give you access to the entire drawer depth, maximizing your storage space.
- Don’t be Afraid to Experiment: Feel free to play around with different divider heights and configurations to accommodate utensils of varying sizes.
- Consider Other Drawer Organizers: This same technique can be used to create custom organizers for your cutlery drawer and other kitchen drawers!
