Want to know the easiest way to build a zipline platform? Of course you do! Building a backyard zipline is only half the fun. A dedicated platform adds a whole new level of excitement (and safety!) for your kids.
When I first installed my zipline, I was so excited to get it up and running that I didn’t even think about building a platform. We just used an old ladder for a while! But, as you can imagine, that got old quickly.

A ladder as a DIY zipline platform? Not ideal!
So, I put my DIY skills to the test and came up with the simplest, easiest way to build a zipline platform.
How to Build a Zipline Platform: The Basics
The great thing about building a zipline platform is that it doesn’t need to be fancy! Here’s what I kept in mind:
- Simplicity is Key: This is for kids, so it’s going to get played on hard! No need for complicated designs or expensive materials.
- Use What You Have: Look around your garage or shed—you might be surprised what you can repurpose!
- Safety First: Always make sure your structure is sturdy and secure.
Gather Your Materials
For this project, I used leftover lumber from previous projects. This included:
- Three 6×6″ Posts: These were leftovers from a backyard bar project.
- Large, Flat Pieces of Wood: I had some old cabinet doors that were perfect for the platform’s surface.
- 2×4″ Wood Scraps: I used these to build a simple ladder.
- Screws: I used heavy-duty screws to attach everything together.
Remember, you can adapt this to whatever materials you have available!

Assembling Your Platform
Here’s a step-by-step guide to building your own zipline platform:
- Create the Base: Arrange your three 6×6″ posts in a triangle shape, making sure they are level.
- Attach the Platform: Place your large, flat pieces of wood on top of the posts and screw them directly into the posts.
- Build the Ladder: Cut your 2×4″ scraps to create a simple ladder. Attach the ladder securely to the platform.

What About Uneven Ground?
I have a slightly sloped backyard, so I had to make a few adjustments. Here’s how I leveled my platform:
- Adjust Post Height: I shortened one of the posts by a couple of inches to compensate for the slope.
- Digging Down: I dug down slightly for a couple of the other posts to ensure the platform was level.
Building a Zipline Platform Without Trees
You don’t necessarily need a tree for your zipline platform! The platform can be freestanding, just like mine.

Simple, sturdy connections are key.
Finishing Touches
- Safety Railing (Optional): For younger children, you can add a simple safety railing around the platform.
- Staining and Sealing: To protect the wood from the elements, you can stain and seal it.
