Building a Stunning and Affordable DIY Floating Corner Desk

Hey there, fellow craft enthusiasts! Robert Kline, your trusted guide in the world of handmade creations, is back with another exciting project! Today, we’re diving into the world of furniture making with a simple yet stylish DIY floating corner desk. This project is perfect for adding a touch of personalized functionality to any room, and the best part? It’s budget-friendly and beginner-friendly!

Why a Floating Corner Desk?

As an artist, I’m always drawn to pieces that blend form and function, and this floating corner desk does just that! It’s an elegant solution for maximizing space, especially in smaller rooms, while providing a dedicated workspace. Plus, the “floating” design adds a modern, airy feel to your decor.

Gathering Your Materials: Embracing the Art of Resourcefulness

One of the things I love most about DIY projects is the opportunity to get creative with materials. For this project, we’ll be using a clever combination of affordable lumber and simple hardware to create a high-end look without the hefty price tag. Here’s what you’ll need:

For the Faux Butcher Block Top:

  • Two 24” x 48” x 1” wood boards (these will be the heart of our faux butcher block!)
  • Two 1” x 4” x 8’ pine trim boards (for that polished bullnose edge)
  • Wood glue (for a bond that’s stronger than a handshake)
  • Wood putty (to fill any imperfections and create a seamless look)
  • Sandpaper (because smooth is always in style)
  • Wood stain (in your desired shade, I went with a weathered oak for a rustic charm)

For the Desk Structure and Installation:

  • Three sturdy table legs (choose a style that speaks to your aesthetic)
  • L-shaped brackets (our secret weapon for secure and invisible leg attachment)
  • A ledger board (a sturdy backbone for our floating desk)
  • Wood screws (the trusty fasteners that hold it all together)
  • A stud finder (to ensure our desk is anchored securely)

Tools of the Trade:

  • Miter saw (for precise cuts)
  • Impact driver and drill (our power duo for efficient assembly)
  • Level (because nobody wants a wonky desk)
  • Measuring tape (precision is key in the world of DIY)

Crafting Your Faux Butcher Block Top: Turning Simple into Stunning

Now for the fun part – creating our very own faux butcher block countertop!

  1. The Bullnose Edge: Begin by attaching the pine trim boards to the edges of your wood boards using wood glue and a nail gun. This creates that beautiful, rounded bullnose edge that mimics the look of a high-end butcher block countertop.

  2. Smooth Operator: Once the glue is dry, sand down the edges to ensure a smooth and seamless transition between the trim and the wood boards.

  3. Staining for Style: Now it’s time to infuse some personality! Apply your chosen wood stain to the top and sides of your faux butcher block top, following the manufacturer’s instructions. Remember, a little stain can go a long way, and multiple thin coats are always better than one thick, gloppy coat.

Assembling Your Floating Desk: Where Functionality Meets Flair

With our stunning faux butcher block top ready, it’s time to assemble our floating desk:

  1. Anchoring the Ledger Board: Begin by installing your ledger board along the wall where you envision your desk. Make sure to hit those studs for maximum support!

  2. Positioning the Top: Now, carefully position your faux butcher block top on top of the ledger board, ensuring it’s level and flush against the wall.

  3. Adding the Legs: With your top securely in place, it’s time to add the legs. I opted for a sleek and modern look with three metal table legs, attaching them to the underside of the top using L-shaped brackets for a seamless and invisible connection. Remember to space them evenly for optimal support.

  4. Bracing for Strength: To provide extra support to the center of the desk (especially important since we’re skipping a center leg for legroom!), I added a couple of bracing pieces using scraps from our pine trim boards. These were attached to the underside of the desk, running from the wall to the front edge, and reinforced with metal brackets for added peace of mind.
