Building a Secret Compartment in Your Staircase: A Step-by-Step Guide

Have you ever wished for a little more storage space in your home, especially for those valuable items you want to keep out of sight? At Robert Kline Art, we love finding creative solutions, and this project ticks all the boxes – it’s clever, practical, and adds an element of intrigue to your home! This guide will walk you through the process of building not just one, but two hidden compartments within your staircase.

Gathering Your Tools and Materials

Before we embark on this exciting journey of clandestine construction, let’s gather our arsenal of tools and materials:

Tools:

  • Screwdriver
  • Drill and Bits
  • Tape Measure
  • Pencil
  • Combination Square
  • Saw
  • Hammer

Materials:

  • 2x6x1’ Pine Board
  • 1x8x3’ Pine Board
  • Floating Floorboard (or other thin material)
  • Cabinet Latch
  • Cable Staple
  • 2-inch Finish Nails
  • 4d (Penny) Wood Nails
  • 3 Plastic Boxes (for storage)

Creating the First Secret Compartment

The beauty of this project lies in its simplicity. We’ll be creating two compartments – one hidden beneath the other. Here’s how to build the first one:

  1. Remove the Tread: Carefully detach the tread of your chosen step, revealing the framework underneath.
  2. Measure for the Bottom: Measure the space between the sides of the staircase frame to get the dimensions for your compartment bottom.
  3. Cut and Insert the Bottom: Using your measurements, cut the floating floorboard (or your chosen material) to size and fit it snugly within the frame.

Adding a Second Secret Compartment

Now for the real secret – a second compartment hidden beneath the first!

  1. Measure for the Second Bottom: Measure the space between the landing joist and the landing frame.
  2. Cut the Second Bottom: Cut another piece of your chosen material to create the bottom for this second hidden compartment.
  3. Secure the Bottom: Use cable staples to secure the second compartment bottom to the landing frame and landing joist.
  4. Add a False Top: Place your plastic box inside and then cover it with a piece of your chosen material to create a false top, effectively hiding the box.

Installing the Back Board

To create a clean finish and ensure the compartments are truly concealed, we’ll install a backboard:

  1. Measure and Cut the Back Board: Measure the width between the outer stair stringers and cut the 1x8x3′ pine board to size.
  2. Cut the Notch: Measure and cut a notch in the backboard to accommodate the middle stair stringer.
  3. Secure the Back Board: Drill pilot holes and nail the backboard to the middle stringer.
  4. Add Triangle Fillers: Cut triangle-shaped pieces from the 2x6x1′ pine board to fill the gaps between the backboard and the side stringers. Secure them with nails.

Adding the Secret Latch

What’s a secret compartment without a discreet way to access it? Here’s how to install the latch:

  1. Align and Attach: Position your chosen cabinet latch on the riser and tread of the step, ensuring it aligns perfectly when closed.
  2. Secure the Latch: Attach the latch securely using screws.

Observations and Summary

It’s important to remember that not all staircases are built perfectly square, especially in older homes. Don’t be afraid to make adjustments along the way to ensure a perfect fit.

This project is incredibly satisfying, especially when you can repurpose materials you already have. The final result? A discreet and functional storage solution that only you know about!
