Building a Modular Sofa with Storage: A DIY Project for Your Tiny Home

In the world of tiny homes, maximizing space is paramount. That’s why I love incorporating multi-functional furniture pieces, like this modular sofa with built-in storage! This project was inspired by a recent tiny house build where the client desired comfortable lounge seating with ample storage and the ability to transform into a guest bed. Sound challenging? It was, but the results were incredible! Let me guide you through the process so you can create your own.

Taking Inspiration from a Rolling Bed Design

The idea for this modular sofa came from a previous project – a rolling bed with lift-top storage supported by hydraulic springs. Its success in terms of comfort, storage, sturdiness, and durability made it the perfect inspiration for this sectional sofa.

Building the Storage Bases

Materials and Tools:

  • 1×8 lumber for the sides
  • Plywood for the top and bottom
  • Surface mounted hinges and hinge supports
  • Hydraulic spring(s) or toy box spring supports
  • 2x4s for height adjustment
  • Furniture glides
  • Screws
  • Drill
  • Saw
  • Tape measure

Construction Steps:

  1. Determine the dimensions: I designed my sofa modules to utilize full-size mattress pieces for the cushions. The smaller piece measures 54″ wide x 27″ deep, while the larger is 54″ wide x 34″ deep.
  2. Assemble the frames: Construct the base frames using 1×8 lumber for the sides and plywood for the top and bottom.
  3. Install the hinges and lid supports: Attach the surface-mounted hinges to the plywood tops and the hinge supports to the frames. For the larger section, I opted for a hydraulic spring, while the smaller one used three toy box lid supports due to weight considerations.
  4. Add height and glides: To achieve the desired sofa height, I attached 2x4s flat to the underside of each base. Make sure the 2x4s extend fully beneath the 2x8s for proper support. Finally, attach furniture glides to the bottom to safeguard your floor.

Creating the Cushions

The cushions were remarkably simple to create:

  • Cut the foam: I used a standard full-size foam mattress, cutting it into pieces to fit the base dimensions and create a back cushion.
  • Sew the covers: A quilted coverlet provided the perfect material for the cushion covers.

The Multi-Functional Element: Converting to a Bed

To enable a seamless transition into a guest bed, I built a step stool measuring 54″ x 75″ to match the back cushion. The step stool doubles as support for the cushions in bed mode. Additionally, swing-out legs on the sectional pieces ensure a level sleeping surface.

Final Thoughts and Tips

This DIY modular sofa project was incredibly rewarding, providing both functional seating and valuable storage space. Here are some takeaways:

  • Hydraulic springs vs. toy box supports: While both worked, hydraulic springs offer superior strength and ease of installation.
  • Plan your dimensions: Consider the size of your mattress when determining the dimensions of your sofa bases.
  • Don’t be afraid to customize: Adjust the dimensions, materials, and finishes to perfectly suit your style and space.

I’m thrilled with how this project turned out and am already envisioning similar lounge seating solutions for other areas! Feel free to share your creations with us at Robert Kline Art – we love to see your DIY projects!
