As an artist, I love creating beautiful things with my hands. But this summer, I embarked on a different kind of creative endeavor – a massive DIY project that pushed my limits and resulted in hours of fun for my family. Inspired by our shared love for American Ninja Warrior, my husband and I decided to build a backyard ninja warrior course for our three sons.
Planning Our Dream Course
Our journey started with research. I stumbled upon Ninja Warrior Blueprints and purchased their detailed plans. While helpful, I craved more visuals and clarity. So, I put on my designer hat and created a 3D model using Sketchup. This brought the project to life and allowed us to visualize the scale and layout.

Next, we consulted experts – my dad, a seasoned woodworker, and my husband’s colleague, a carpentry teacher. With their input, we finalized our lumber and concrete needs, opting for sturdy 6×6 posts and durable Quikrete Fence N’ Post concrete.
Setting the Foundation: A Team Effort
The arrival of the lumber was a sight to behold – and a stark reminder of the task ahead. Given the sheer weight of the 16-foot posts, we made the wise decision to hire Arrow Postholes, a local company, to set them for us.

With the posts securely in place, it was time to call in reinforcements. Friends and family braved the summer heat to help install the horizontal beams – the backbone of our course. Using 2×8 boards and carriage bolts, we created a rock-solid foundation. This step was physically demanding but incredibly rewarding, proving that teamwork makes the dream work (and makes heavy lifting a lot more bearable!).

A mountain of lumber awaited us, ready to be transformed into a challenging course.
Obstacles, Challenges, and Triumphs
Reaching New Heights
With the basic structure in place, we focused on accessibility and safety. A cargo net and ladder provided access, while strategically placed rest-stops with handles offered a break for weary climbers.

Halfway points with handles provide a welcome rest for climbers.
Safety was paramount. After researching various flooring options, we opted for a combination of grass (for now) and gymnastic crash pads. As much as we loved the idea of rubber flooring, the cost was prohibitive.

Testing Limits and Building Muscles
Our course started to come alive with the addition of repurposed trampoline bars, hanging holds, and a rope climb. The “devil steps,” a series of inclined cross-beams, proved to be a thrilling challenge.

We incorporated a variety of challenging hand-holds, including pig-noses, wood cliff-hangers, and coated metal safety handles. We even added a slackline for balance training and imaginative play.

Creative Touches and Future Plans
One of the most satisfying aspects of this project was the ability to continuously adapt and add new challenges. Repurposed tires, vibrant cheese walls, and a challenging pipe obstacle with interchangeable grips kept the course fresh and exciting.
"Constructing the ninja warrior course: securing a wooden beam"
Building the course became a family affair, with everyone pitching in.
The boys were actively involved throughout the process, from drilling holes to gathering stray stones. Their enthusiasm was contagious and made the hard work even more rewarding.

A Worthwhile Investment
Our backyard ninja warrior course has been an incredible investment – not just financially (totaling around $6,000-$7,000), but also in terms of family bonding, physical fitness, and a renewed appreciation for the power of DIY.

This project pushed us beyond our comfort zones, taught us valuable skills, and instilled in our children a love for physical activity.

I’m incredibly proud of what we accomplished together. It’s a testament to the power of creativity, determination, and the unwavering support of family and friends.
