A couple of weeks ago, like many of you, I found myself at home, staring at the four walls, wondering how to fill the hours. Work had been replaced by “an abundance of caution” emails, and “Zoom” was quickly becoming a regular part of my vocabulary. It was in this strange, new world that I stumbled upon the perfect antidote to social isolation: a virtual karaoke party.
My First Virtual Karaoke Experience
My friend Maddie has a strict karaoke philosophy: a verse and chorus is all you need. Keep it short, sweet, and avoid any awkward, forgotten instrumental breaks. (A lesson learned the hard way after a particularly long rendition of Celine Dion’s “It’s All Coming Back to Me Now”).
So, when I was invited to a Zoom karaoke party hosted by Bay Area friends Sarah Katz-Hyman and Anthony Ryan, I was intrigued. The rules were simple: download Zoom, fire up Watch2Gether (for synchronized lyrics), and prepare to belt it out. Duets and costumes? Encouraged!
From Awkward Beginnings to Karaoke Confidence
Logging into the Zoom call, I was met with a grid of friendly faces, most of whom were strangers. The initial awkwardness quickly faded as Sarah kicked things off with a spirited performance of the Dixie Chick’s “Goodbye Earl.” Technical glitches and all, it was pure karaoke gold.
Suddenly, it was my turn. My girlfriend and I had prepped a rousing rendition of the Backstreet Boys’ “I Want It That Way,” complete with dramatic choreography (apologies to our neighbors). Mid-song, disaster struck: my microphone died. We powered through, miming the lyrics with the same intensity as before. Thankfully, a quick fix later, we were back on track.
The Power of Shared Silliness
What followed was a whirlwind of musical mayhem. A duet from “Wicked,” a makeshift wimple for a Sister Act solo, and a rousing rendition of “La Vie Bohème” from Rent. The highlight? Lauren, a participant from Washington D.C., delivering a powerhouse performance of Alanis Morissette’s “You Oughta Know” into a bottle of Clorox.
As the night went on, strangers became friends, united by our shared love of music and the sheer joy of letting loose. It was a much-needed reminder that even in isolation, human connection can thrive.
More than Just a Singalong
Our Zoom karaoke party wasn’t a one-off. Inspired by the success of our virtual singalong, Dustin Senos, a fellow karaoke enthusiast, created “Karaoke Camp”— a 24/7 online karaoke platform hosted on Zoom. As Dustin shared, “I was thinking about what I could do to maybe create that myself, or at least give the option for randoms to connect online.”
And that’s the beauty of this experience. It’s about more than just hitting the high notes; it’s about creating a space for joy, connection, and a healthy dose of escapism. In a world that often feels overwhelming, sometimes the best medicine is a microphone and a healthy dose of karaoke courage.
So, I encourage you to gather your friends, fire up Zoom, and unleash your inner rockstar. You might be surprised at the sense of joy and connection you find.
