Don’t let the technicalities intimidate you! Building your own vertical hydroponic tower is easier than you might think, and much more affordable than buying a pre-made system. With a few basic materials and our step-by-step guide, you’ll have your own flourishing tower garden in no time.
Materials You’ll Need:
- White Vinyl Fence Post (5″ x 5″ x 8′)
- White Vinyl Pyramid Post Tops (2)
- 45-Gallon Tank
- Opaque Plastic Sheet (for tank lid)
- 3″ PVC Pipe (10′)
- Submersible Pump (400 gallons per hour)
- Light Timer
- 5/8″ x 5/8″ x 8′ White Vinyl Blind Stop Molding
- Spray Adhesive
- PVC Epoxy
- 3″ Net Pots (28)
- Utility Hinges (1″ and 1 ½”)
- Machine Screws and Nuts (#6 32″ x 3/8″)
- Clear Silicone (aquarium safe)
- ½” Nylon Hose Barb Tee
- Vinyl Hose (½” inner diameter, 3/4″ outer diameter, 10′ long)

Step-by-Step Construction Guide:
- Tower Height: Cut the vinyl fence post to your desired height (5-6 feet is ideal).
- Tank Lid: Drill a hole in the plastic sheet for your tower to pass through, creating a secure lid for the tank.
- Net Pot Placement: Mark the desired spacing for your net pots on the tower, staggering them on each side.
- Net Pot Holes: Using the template provided in the original document (link at the end of this article), cut out net pot holes using a jig saw.
- Net Pot Supports: Cut 3″ PVC pipe segments at a 45-degree angle to create supports for your net pots. Secure these supports to the tower using PVC epoxy.
- Water Outlet: Create a rectangular opening at the bottom of the tower for water drainage.
- Tower Top: Prepare the tower top by attaching two white vinyl pyramid post tops with a hinge. Drill holes in one of the tops to distribute nutrient solution.
- Nutrient Distribution: Cut the vinyl blind stop molding into 4-inch pieces and attach them inside the tower above each net pot hole to ensure even water flow.
- Net Pot Finishing: Smooth the edges of the net pot holes and slightly melt them with a soldering iron to prevent water leakage.
- Reservoir Access: Cut a small hinged lid on the tank cover for easy access to check nutrient solution levels and monitor pH/EC.
- Pump and Tubing: Place the submersible pump inside the reservoir and attach the vinyl hose. Use a T barb to split the hose, supplying nutrient solution to both towers.
- Timer Setup: Connect the pump to a timer to automate the watering schedule. Adjust the watering frequency based on your chosen plants.
- Planting: Fill the net pots with your preferred growing medium, such as expanded clay balls, and carefully plant your seedlings.
- Water Splash Shield: Cut aluminum shields (using the template provided) and attach them above the net pots to prevent water from splashing onto the leaves.
- Support and Enjoy: Provide support for your tower by securing it with wires or a bar. Fill the reservoir with nutrient solution, turn on the pump, and watch your vertical garden thrive!
